Chapter 1

As the teacher glared around the room, picking females first, I wiped the palm of my hands against my jeans. You’re probably wondering why me, a guy, is worried when the teacher is picked parts for Romeo & Juliet. Well, you see, I’m a closeted trans guy. The boyish haircut can easily be brushed off as a lesbian and the trans pride pins on my bag can be brushed off as a LGBTQ+ supporter. “Allison Martinez, we have no more girl characters so would you be fine playing a guy?” The teacher looked kind, almost sorrowful.

“Uh, yeah, definitely!!” My voice cracks at the end.

“Wonderful!! Now, any guys up for being Tybalt?” I space out the rest of the conversation. “August!!” Someone pushes my shoulder harshly.

“Really, dude??” I push Maddox back, harder.

“I’m trying to tell you that she picked out who you’d play but if you’re gonna be like this then you’ll have to wait until Tuesday to know your character.” He sighed looking away. I rolled my eyes, turning back to my own thoughts. Maddox is trans too but, unlike me, he actually sounds and looks like a guy. While I wore binders, he strutted around with his flat chest. He has been on T for eight years and recently went through top surgery. He was very muscular looking while I was very weak looking. Maddox has been out for so freaking long that the school doesn’t remember when he went by Maddison and looked feminine. Maddox also knew he was actually a guy since a young age. I didn’t realize until I was about twelve. Three years after Maddox started T. I swung my bag over my shoulder as the bell rung.

Maddox climbed onto his motorcycle as I started on the sidewalk. “Aye yo, August!! Want a ride?” Maddox slowed down next to me.

“Um, sure!!” I blushed taking the helmet from his hand.

“You alright?” He yelled, revving the engine. I looked down, shaking my head. Maddox smirked, driving away from the sidewalk. After a short ride, Maddox pulled up to his house. “Ummmm, wh-why are we at yo-your house?” I whispered, tripping on the step up.

“Dude, we haven’t hung out all summer and half of the school year.” He replied, laughing. “Yeah? I just thought Abigail was taking up your time….?” I sighed, looking down.

“Dude!! My sister will never take up too much time!!” He smiled, opening the door as his dog, Brownie, jumped on my legs.

“Is Gianna home? Or Abigail?” I smiled at Brownie.

“Gianna is with her boyfriend and Abigail is with her wife. We have the place all to ourselves!! And before you ask, my parents are still on vacation.” Maddox smirked, rolling his eyes as I opened the freezer.

“You said you needed help with pre-calc, right??” Mad asked, looking at the box of fudge pops in my hand. I nodded, grabbing a bowl.

“Are you gonna make your usual before we start?” Mad laughed as I pulled out three buckets of ice cream.

“Don’t I always?” I laughed, cocking my head. Mad smiled, glancing at my hands then the ground.

“I miss this shit” Mad smiled sadly as I dished mint ice cream into my bowl.

“Make me one.” Mad yelled, shoving me lightly, grabbing a bowl.

Mad and I were on the floor, listening to Sleeping with Sirens, when Gianna came home. “Hey, Ally!!” Gianna greeted. I looked up from my phone at her, glaring.

“Shit!! Sorry, Auggie.” Gianna sighed.

“You always fuck up with August’s name and pronouns, bitch!!” Mad yelled with a fire burning behind his forest green eyes.

“Mad, dude. It’s fine. This is still new to Gianna.” I smiled lightly, grabbing Mad’s upper arm.

“But she fucking dead named you!!” Mad yelled, storming over to his younger sister. Gianna is fifteen while Mad is eighteen. Then I’m over being seventeen.

“Maddox Joseph Daniels, calm the fuck down right now!!” I yelled standing up. Mad immediately looked down while Gianna’s jaw dropped looking at me.

“Auggie, you never swear.” Gianna whispered, walking over to me slowly.

“I kn-know. I had to calm Maddox down.” I sighed, looking down at my dirty Converse.

“Hey, August, if you need to you, you can chill in my room with me while Mads calms down?” Gianna whispered, grabbing my shoulder.

“O-ok. Thank you, Gigi!!” I smiled, using her old nickname. Gianna looked down, blushing. I laughed, grabbing her hand and walking up to her room.

“Are you okay?” I asked, sitting on her bed.

“Heh, yeah. Just, um, some things.” She laughed awkwardly, scratching the back of her neck as she sat at her desk. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a guy sitting on my bed that I’m not related to.” Gianna laughed, playing with the edge of her baby blue fingernail.

“Gia, you can sit with me….” I laughed, moving over.

“Th-thanks.” She smiled, sitting down beside me. “You know, I’ve never been this close to a cute guy.” Gianna laughed awkwardly.

“Oh, um, then you’d have to look down the street for an actual cute guy ’cause I’m freaking hot.” I laughed lightly.

“You are hot too.” Gianna smiled, looking into my brown eyes with her emerald green eyes, while she set her hand on top of mine.

“Well, then you must not have seen yourself recently.” I smirked, leaning close to her. She blushed, looking down. I flipped my hand over, grabbing her hand. She looked up, smiling.

“We should hang out more.” She whispered.

“We’ll see.” I smirked.

“Auggie!! I’m fine now but Gia is staying in her room.” Mad yelled up the stairs.

“Bye, Gigi.” I smirked, standing up.

I glanced at Mad as Supernatural played on the screen. “I really wish I could talk to you about more serious things.” I sighed as Mad turned over onto his stomach. I smiled, clicked the tv off and laying down. “Good night, Maddox.” I whispered.

“Auggie?” Gianna whispered, sitting in front of me. I looked up, sighing. “Auggie, please don’t tell Max.” Gianna crawled closer.

“About what?” I laughed quietly.

“What happened in my room.” She whispered back.

“I don’t talk to sophomores that often so no worries.” I leaned back.

“But you talk to me.” She put her hand on my knee, rubbing slightly with her thumb.

“I’m also friends with your brother.” I raised one eyebrow.

“I know.” She sighed, pulling her hand away. I looked up at her and saw many unspoken words behind her emerald eyes.

“Gianna, what happened?” I whispered, gently, grabbing her hand.

“Max messaged me. He said that he found someone better.” Gianna took a deep breath. “You don’t deserve to go through that crap.” I whispered, pulling her closer to me.

“Th-thank you.” Gianna whimpered. I nodded, smirking. “Auggie, what’s going through your mind?” She cocked her head.

“This.” I smirked, pulling Gianna onto my lap. She blushed as I wrapped my arms around her waist. “Are you ok, Gigi?” I whispered.

“Just tired, I guess.” She responded, sighing. I removed my hands.

“You need to sleep. Bed, now.” I leaned closer to her face.

“Auggie, I want you to spend the night with me, please?” Gianna looked in my eyes as tears brimmed her eyes.

“Not like Mad would miss me.” I smiled, looking over to Mad, as Gianna stood up, offering her hand to me. I smiled, standing up, as she walked back to her room. I silently walked behind her as she entered her room.

“Couch or bed?” Gianna asked, turning on her desk lamp.

“Couch. It’s your bed so you get to sleep in it. Plus, the gorgeous princess needs comfort” I chuckled, sitting on her dark blue couch. She blushed dark red at the end of my sentence.

“Good night, gorgeous.” I whispered.

“Good night, Auggie.” She responded, clicking the lamp off.
