Chapter 1
In life, everyone does things they regret, right? Well I have regrets too. My biggest regret is the reason for my death. This is my story of heartache, betrayal, and above all, my demise.
“Come on Dia! We’re going to be late!” I shouted to my little 16-year-old sister, Diamond. Hopping down the steps two at a time, she rushed down the stairs.
When I say sister, I only mean by blood. With her wavy blonde hair and hazel eyes and my straight chestnut hair and blue-green eyes, we looked nothing alike. I looked like my father and she, my mother, except for her eyes. No one in our family has brown eyes, so we don’t know how she got hers.
“What took you so long?” I questioned.
“Chill Elaine,” she answered nonchalantly.” I was just putting on some makeup.”
“Why would you need makeup when we’re going camping?!” I asked incredulously.
“Elaine! Just leave me alone! You not my mom!” she shouted, all of a sudden infuriated.
To be honest, I don’t know why I was so mad. It made sense for her to put on makeup, since we were going with a few friends. One of which she has an ‘on-off’ crush on.
Whenever she suddenly had a crush on him, she would spend countless hours at home telling me,”Oh! Robert is so strong and handsome!”or,”Oh! Robert has the dreamiest eyes!”
Pulling into the bustling Walmart parking lot, I parked into a slot and waited there. After a while of awkward tension from the argument we had before, the boys finally came out of the store.
Carrying food and jugs of water was William (Will) Fletcher. He had soft, feathery, fawn hair and stormy gray eyes. Carrying other supplies was Robert Everstine. He also had fawn hair, but his eyes were like glistening emeralds.
“Watsup gals?” shouted Robert from across the lot.
I rolled my eyes at his antics and glanced at the passenger seat where Dia was waiting. As the boys neared, I teased,”You’ve got a little drool coming down over there.”
“Wait where?” she frantically asked pulling out a mirror and replying angrily,”There’s nothing, E! Stop laughing! It’s not funny!”
All of a sudden I stopped laughing and said,”Yousaidsnot.”
“What?”
“You. Said. Snot.” I answered her as if I were talking to a child. Her face grew redder and I threw my head back and started laughing once again.
“Whachya laughing about ladies?” Asked Robert.
Giving a little shriek as his deep voice sounded besides me, I slapped him and exclaimed,”You scared me you you you-“
“-handsome thing?”
“No!” I blushed as he smirked. He took his hand and gently caressed my face. The butterflies in my stomach started flying faster and faster as he took a strand of my hair and tucked it behind my ear.
Suddenly, someone tapped me from behind. Still dazed from Robert, I turned around.
“Boo!” Will shouted through his reaper mask, holding up a plastic toy knife to my neck.
“Ahhhh!” I screeched as everyone started laughing.
Those two idiots planned this. And here I thought Robert liked me. Why would I care? I have no idea why. Now’s my chance for payback. Should I do it? He might get hurt. Then I’d go to jail. I can’t go to jail, at least, not yet. Wait what? I internally battled with myself. I’m doing it.
Seizing the opportunity, I quickly took Will’s knife and stabbed him in the chest. In doing so, red started sleeping down his chest. He blankly looked at me and his eyes started fluttering.
What?! It was a toy knife! Oh no. Oh no. Oh no! I silently thought as he started closing his eyes.
Gasping for breath as more red soaked everywhere, he whispered,”Elaine, c-c-come h-h-here.”
I quickly moved to the back seat and pushed Robert out of the way. “I’m here,” I gently answered.
“I-I-I need to tell you s-s-something. L-l-lean in,” he stuttered. I leaned in and he whispered,” I got you! Ha! That was for blitz attacking me with water balloons last week!”
Stumbling back, I quickly regained my posture and glared at him,”Oh it is on like Donkey Kong!”
Laughing, he choked out,”Like what now?”
Rolling my eyes, I answered,”Never mind. Clean yourself up. You smell like a basket of fresh tomatoes. We need to get going. You guys have delayed us for long enough.”
“What are you talking about? You’re the one who stabbed me!” he grinned cheekily. Starting the navy blue minivan, we left the parking lot and began our journey.
As the bright full moon started dancing across the sky, we finally passed under an old and worn sign that said ‘Timber Cabins’ in white, chipped paint.
Silently bringing our stuff and checking in, since Dia was asleep in Will’s arms, we nestled into our comfortable wooden cabins, and simultaneously drifted off to sleep.
Little did I know that that was the last time we would sleep peacefully and without fear.
