Prologue: Consequences
The white walls of the hospital corridor surrounded Rebecca as she waited to be called in. The loud and insistent whispers of those around her grew louder with each pounding vein in her head. Covering her ears with her hands, she tried to drown it out.
She had vowed to never return to this place yet here she was; Alone, bleeding and desperate. Flashbacks of the incident only added to the pain she was feeling. Tears blurred her vision as she bit down on her wrist to prevent herself from screaming.
“Mommy, what's wrong with her?”
Rebecca looked up at the mother and her child as they stared at her from the opposite end of the room. She knew she stood out amongst the white clean walls and the white clean patients, but before she could give a snarky response, something or more accurately, someone blocked her view of them.
“Miss Steel, Doctor Hutch is waiting for you. Follow me this way.” The nurse explained, waiting patiently for Rebecca to acknowledge her.
Rebecca tensed as she looked up at the nurse. She could feel all eyes on her as she got up to follow. This wasn’t the first time Rebecca had to deal with curious humans. The whispers that had quieted down, returned with full force the further she walked down the hall, and no matter how much she wished she couldn’t, she knew she would always hear them.
“Right in here.” The nurse pushed open the door, motioning her inside.
“I’ll be right outside if you need anything.”
Rebecca could see under the nurses disguise and new exactly what she was. The illusion shimmered under the bright office lights as she left office, shutting the door behind her. Rebecca turned back around, taking in her surroundings and all the memories that came with it.
“Welcome back, Rebecca.” Doctor Hutch smiled. Rebecca's eyes snapped towards the Goddess, disguised as a human. The goddess that ruined her life. “I never thought I’d see you again after our last encounter.”
Rebecca felt like she was about to puke. The room started to blur as her emotions started to spiral out of control. After all the training she had gotten, she was still such a cry baby.
“Please, Rebecca, take a seat.”
Fisting her hands, she walked towards a leather chair placed at the other side of the ‘doctors’ mahogany desk. She tried not to think of the last time she was here.
“I heard what happened. I know why you are here. He’s dead isn’t he.”
Rebecca gulped, swallowing back a sob. Green eyes flashed in her mind, accompanied with the sound of a distant masculine laugh.
“He couldn’t save you and so he sacrificed himself.”
Doctor Hutch started to laugh. She grabbed onto her stomach as she chuckled loudly, wiping a fake tear after she was done.
“Oh, Rebecca, I thought I taught you better than this.”
Sweat gathered over her brows as she looked up at the Doctor begging for help with her eyes.
“This is what you get for disobeying. Choices reap consequences and these are yours.”
For the first time in a while, Rebecca felt scared, small and alone. This was her last chance to save her loved ones, to save him. Her last chance to repent.
“Please doctor…” Rebecca rasped, “Please, release him!”
“Do you understand what you are asking of me, Rebecca?” Dr Hutch smirked, “Do you understand the consequences?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Is this how you will use your favour?”
“Yes!”
“Then as of now, Rebecca Steel, you will no longer remember the past 4 years off your life and those you met along the way. They will no longer remember you either. Your choices and decisions have been reset and from this day on, you will return to what you once were. I grant you this chance to change the past and build a better future. But if you fail, you will have to leave with the consequence forever. Do you agree to the terms, Rebecca?”
Closing her eyes, Rebecca thought of him and of everything they had fought to get to where they were. A tear slid down her cheek as she said, “Yes, I agree to the terms.”
“Good luck Rebecca and may destiny align in your favour.”
The world went black.
