Run
I will always remember how clear the night sky was.
The blurry shapes of houses wizzing by my window.
The perfectly poised smoke dancing atop the brick chimney.
I will always remember how deafeningly loud it was.
The comforting sound of the distant radio.
The yellow eerie street lamps.
I will always remember the big red suitcase sitting next to me.
I remember thinking that the red lights on the back of cars look like eyes, piercing through me. They knew what we were running from.
I will always remember the slight chill I had, but I still blame that on winter weather.
I will always remember the leaf in the lower left corner of our windshield.
I will always remember the startling number of trucks following us. Running alongside the car window, keeping me company.
The cars on the road created a sound like thunder.
I remember seeing the camper van, thinking that was going to be me and Addie. Blinking away tears I repeat to myself, we don't have time for more lost dreams.
I looked out and met her eyes through my window. One last time. We turned a corner and they were gone. I memorized the license plate as they drove away from us. Its okay, its not forever. But I couldn't shake away my tears.
