Chapter 1

Evie gripped her bike handlebars tight down the last hill of the 2-mile ride to school, like always, she'd never been much of a fanatic for speed, unless safely buckled into some form of a harness. The heady summer air whipped past her, flicking droplets of sweat from her brow as she rode to orientation. The summer before 9th grade had passed so quickly and before she knew it they were a week out from the beginning of their last year before moving up to the high school. She sped into the parking lot and parked the bike on one of the racks, not bothering to lock it in. They were in Paradise after all.

Paradise what a bit of a joke to the surrounding cities in Anderson County. A tiny enclosed bubble of a place where one could go to live and forget about all the troubles of the regular world. Clean streets, great schools, with crime and poverty at rates lower than 1%, it was hard to remember what a horrible wreck earth was at the moment. Evie remembered though.

Eagle Creek Upper School was much like the middle one, the real change came when one moved from the tiny freshman center to the bustling, chaotic throng that was the upperclassman's hallways. Today was just orientation though so she was just looking for her locker and schedule. Evie pulled off her helmet, frizzing up her hair. Sighing, she frantically pulled it down.
