Chapter I Simms Enterprises

It’s springtime in the state of New York. On Long Island, on this Thursday, Jermel waits for an important telephone call from one of his assistants. Sitting behind his desk he reads the stock exchange section of the newspaper. The five ft. eleven, handsome, medium built, and somewhat soft-spoken man is the owner of Simms Enterprise. It’s a cooperation that makes sophisticated computers, electronic devices, and appliances. His hair is short and nicely trimmed. He is wearing a dark blue three-piece suit, a white shirt, a dark blue tie, black sock, and black leather loafers. Looking at one of his investments he thinks for a few seconds. Thinking there’s a chance the stock might soar, he wonders if he should increase his investment. Again, thinking, he shakes his head from side to side. He continues to look at the paper. As he turns the page he glances toward his left. Getting a glimpse of the portrait on the wall of his wife and five children he stops and stares at it. Very proudly he smiles. He smiles at what he considers to be the riches that make his life the most meaningful and beautiful thing that ever existed. In the portrait is his wife of twenty-seven years Anita Rachel Justine Simms, his oldest Jermel Dupray Simms The Second, his second oldest Amagoala Bliza Simms, his third oldest Natasha Anita Simms, and his two youngest Dramel Drapraise Simms, and Tanesha Macole Simms. He closes the paper, lays it on his desk, and sits back in a daze of happiness from the thoughts that they bring to mind. A few seconds pass. The intercom buzzes. After it buzzes a couple of times he awakens from out of his daze. He presses a button on it.

“Yes, Channa.”

He says.

“Mr. Simms, is it alright to speak to you about some of the ideas that I feel should be presented at tomorrow’s meeting?”

His secretary replies. Surprised, he looks at his watch. He then replies,

“Oh—. Channa. I’m sorry. It completely slipped my mind. Yes, come in.”

Quickly thinking, he adds on,

“Have Febe monitor the telephone until you get back.”

“Yes, sir!”

Channa Manning is an attractive woman who is about five ft. seven. She has a slim built, and somewhat of a timid voice. She has black hair that extends past her shoulders. She is in her middle twenties. She was once the girlfriend of his oldest son. He had become acquainted with her one day while visiting his father’s business. The weight of people looking at him as taking after his father, and probably one day taking over his business had put a tremendous strain on their relationship. They broke up but remained the best of friends. The family looks at her as one of the family. Between the family, there’s a deeply rooted feeling that one day the two of

them will get back together again. Wearing a light brown and white pin-striped jacket with matching skirt, a white satin V neck blouse, and a pair of light brown two-inch-high heels shoes she walks into his office.

“Hi!”

She says with a smile as she looks at her boss of about three years.

“Hi. Sorry, but I’ve had a lot of things on my mind lately.”

He replies as she sits down.

“Oh. It’s completely understandable sir, especially with the increase in sales that we’ve had in the recent months.”

Smiling, he looks her up and down in a sly way. He then quickly swings around in his chair. As he places his arms on his desk he says,

“Channa, do you know that some of the qualities that contribute to the successful abilities of a cooperation are the respect, the professionalism, and the inspirational abilities that an employee could reveal to his or her employer?”

Knowing from his expressions that he’s thinking highly of her, and is hinting about the cooperate meeting she smiles replying,

“Yes, sir.”

Thinking about her as a daughter, he smiles as he leans back in his chair joyously thinking. He then says,

“Yeah—, unlike any other employer and employee relationship, I feel that we have a relationship that is of the utmost and is of a unique nature.”

She smiles. Sitting up, he continues to speak,

“Respect, professionalism and very inspirational? You’re a representation of those qualities to the highest means.”

“Thank you sir.”

She smiling replies. As he leans back in his chair he inspiringly says,

“Oh, don’t let me hold you up. Let me hear what you have to say.”

She stands up, turns around and curiously walks a few steps to collect her thoughts. Remembering that her presentation must be of cooperate standards she pauses for a few seconds. Quite sure of what she wants to say she turns around. Feeling confident she says,

“Sir, it’s with a great amount of respect, and concern for the cooperation that I feel that plans should be made to increase the motivational desires for sufficiency, and reliability among the employees. I also feel that to lessen the complications brought about from the overwhelming results that we’ve had in sales, a larger staff’ should be considered. It should be carefully formulated from a constructive, and conservative plan that will increase our opportunity to be productive in other areas without the deprivation of our humanitarian ideologies.”

Astounded by what’s of interest to her he moves his head back surprisingly looking at her. He thinks for a few seconds. While thinking, he curiously nods his head up and down a few times.

Channa, now feeling that her presentation is suitable for the cooperate meeting waits for a reply. A few seconds pass. The intercom buzzes.

“Excuse me.”

He says as he reaches towards the intercom.

“Yes Febe.”

“Sir your wife is on line one.”

“O.k. Thank you.”

He presses the button for line one. He and his wife speak, “Yes sweetheart.”

“Hi sweetheart!”

“Hi. Is there any problem?”

“No, I just called to say hello.”

Humorously, she then says,

“Hello—.”

He laughs a little. Channa surprised and humored quietly laughs.

“How long will it be before you’ll be home?”

His wife asks.

“It shouldn’t be long. I’ll give you a call later and let you know. O.k. sweetheart?”

“O.k.!”

“Talk to you later.”

“O.k.! Love ya!”

He looks at Channa for a few seconds and smiles. Looking back towards the intercom, he replies,

“Love ya too— sweetheart!”

She laughs a little. The sound of her sending him kisses is heard over the intercom. Again, Channa astonished and humored quietly laughs a little. Jermel inspired by his wife’s response smiles, and slightly nods head up and down. He then presses the button that ends the transmission. Thinking back into his business affairs, he curiously stands. He looks at her with a firm look. His reaction leaves her curious. At the same time, it increases her anxiety. He sits back down. After thinking for a few seconds, he again looks at her.

“Sit down Channa.”

He curiously says. She sits down. He stands back up. Curiously, he paces the floor back and forth a few times. Looking at her he thinks for a few more seconds. Afterward, he walks over to his desk by her. After moving a few items aside, he sits on it. In a calm and appreciative manner, he says,

“Miss Manning.”

“Yes, sir.”

“I feel that your topics for discussion could be very valuable towards furthering the success of this cooperation.”

As he stands, he continues to speak,

“With all due respect and appreciation, I’ll trust and honor your abilities to give a faultless lecture about the essentialities involving the contents of

those topics.”

“Oh, Mr. Simms!”

She happily replies jumping out of her seat. Overwhelmed, she hugs him. Making sure that she doesn’t kiss him on the lips, she steadily kisses him all over his face. She kisses him with so much of an impact that she knocks him back on his desk.

“A— Miss Manning.”

He responds grasping for air. She continues to kiss him all over his face.

“A— Miss Manning.”

He again responds grasping for air. Steadily, she continues to kiss him.

“Miss Manning!”

He again responds grasping for air. Surprisingly, realizing her reactions, she let go of him. Again, she’s surprised by a loud thumping sound, and the sound of him yelling in agony from the impact of his head hitting the desk.

“Ouch!”

He yelled. Shocked, she tenses up shrugging her shoulders.

“Oops. Sorry, sir.”

She says in a timid, frightened and embarrassed tone of voice. Jermel recovering from her response sluggishly sits up. He shakes his head from side to side trying to ward off the effects.

“Wow. What hit me?”

He says as he grabs a hold of his desk for support. He looks at her and notices that she’s upset, frightened and embarrassed. He responds in the ways of hoping to eliminate her worries,

“Hey—, that’s alright.”

He says. He steps back about a foot and looks at her as he holds her arms in assurance of what he’s saying. Channa, still sadden is unable to look at him. Affectionately, he places his finger under her chin. Slowly and gently, he raises her head. He gives her a smile that’s reassuring,

“Congratulations!”

He says inspiringly, sincerely and somewhat intimately. Totally relieved of anguish, she smiles. With the hopes of enlightening her more, he inspiringly takes a giant step back. Turning to the side as he folds his arms, he looks at her.

“What took you so long?”

He says in a state of mind that represents poise, boldness and sophistication. Joyfully, she laughs.

“That will be all Miss Manning.”

He says with a smile. Joyfully, she looks at him almost unable to speak,

“Thank you sir.”

She very timidly replies. Happy, and yet somewhat nervously, she walks towards the door. Jermel looking at her smiles responding,

“Oh. Miss Manning.”

Startled by the sound of his voice she trips forward. The distance between her and the door breaks her fall. Jermel looks at her somewhat surprised and dumbfounded. He smiles as he shakes his head from side to side. Channa, quickly regaining her posture turns around, and tries to reply in a firm tone of voice,

“Yes, sir.”

He smiles and then winks at her saying,

“Good luck.”

“Thank you, sir.”

Smiling, and still feeling somewhat nervous, she opens the door. After walking out of his office, she closes it. He sits back behind his desk. Intuitionally, he looks at his wife, and then his oldest son in the family portrait. The thoughts of his son humorously, and eagerly smiling engulfs him. The pounding from his head hitting the desk throbs through his head harder. Holding it, he surprisingly looks at the door in the thoughts of Channa. Again, he looks at his son smiling in the family portrait. Again, he looks at the door thinking about Channa. Rubbing his head, he again looks at his son in the family portrait.

“Yeah. One big happy family.”

He says in a tone of resentment. He turns towards the front of his desk and begins to work. Still feeling torment by the thoughts of his son he turns, and looks at him in the family portrait yelling,

“I was only playing with her!”

Still, rubbing his head, he swings back around to the front of his desk. He begins to work. A few seconds pass. The intercom buzzes. He presses a button on it.

“Yes, Channa.”

He says still rubbing his head.

“Sir, your assistant Mr. Fairweld is on line two.”

“O.k. Thank you. Hold all of my calls please?”

“Yes, sir.”

He presses the button for line two. He and his assistant talk.

“Yes, what is it Lennard?”

He says still rubbing his head.

“Sir! The Maleski deal just came through! They want ten of the models X973!”

Surprised, he stops rubbing his head. He goes into a daze of thoughts for a few seconds. Curiously, he then replies,

“Are you sure not the XY973?”

“Yes, sir!”

Again, he goes into a daze of thoughts for a few seconds. Curiously, he then replies,

“Hm—. O.k. Good work. Take the rest of the day off. Meet me in the conference room tomorrow at one.”

“Yes, sir!”

Jermel presses a button ending the transmission. He leans back in his chair and thinks for a few seconds. Afterward, he looks into his schedule book. After sorting some things out he presses the button to his secretary’s extension.

“Yes Mr. Simms!”

She replies with a whole lot of zeal in her voice.

“Did I get any calls?”

“No Sir!”

She again responds with a whole lot of zeal. Sensing the enthusiasm in her voice he smiles to its captivation saying,

“O.— k.—.”

After thinking for a few seconds, he says,

“Listen, I’ve got some things that I’ve got to sought out. I’ll probably be out of my office for the rest of the day. If anybody come or call, standard procedures.”

“Yes, sir! Will that be all?”

She again responds with a whole lot of zeal. Quietly, he laughs a little. After thinking for a few seconds, he replies,

“Oh, would you lock up before you leave?”

“Yes, sir! Will that be all?”

She again responds with a whole lot of zeal. Pausing for a few seconds he leans back in his chair quietly laughing. Still, quietly laughing he leans forward saying,

“No Channa! Have a good day!”

She senses happiness in his response. She knows that as a friend and a business correspondent that she achieved her task.

“Thank you, sir!”

She inspiringly replies. Still, quietly laughing he replies,

“No need to thank me Channa. The pleasure is all mines.”

He presses the button on the intercom ending the transmission. The thoughts of Channa being an inspiring and sufficient secretary makes him proud. Thinking about her he smiles. Appreciatively, he nods his head up and down a few times. Again, he thinks for a little while. After coming to some decisions, he puts some papers into his briefcase and locks it. After grabbing his suit coat from off its rack he puts it on. He grabs his briefcase. Using the side entrance to his office he walks to the elevator. Some people greet him as he walks. Others greet him while he waits. Two elevators open almost simultaneously. They become somewhat crowded with people leaving and going to other areas of the building. A young and attractive woman who was doing business with a section of the cooperation gets into the elevator that he’s in just before it closes. Surprised that she’s standing next to the CEO who is also considered as somewhat of a celebrity, she smiles looking at him astonishingly. Moving a little closer to him, she romantically stares him up and down. Intuitionally, sensing that she may be a contributing acknowledgment to the development of the cooperation he surprisingly moves his head back astoundingly. Playing her up, he smiles. He then turns towards the side wall of the elevator. Looking up, he whisperingly pleads. Some of the people who are visiting, some who are employees’ looks at his response. Quietly, they laugh. The elevator reaches the second floor. After some of his employees get out and out of his view they laugh and talk about the incident. As the elevator closes, the woman continues to stare at him intimately. She moves closer to him.

She smiles with an impression of feeling relieved of not being overcrowded. Some of the people who are in the elevator continue to look on quietly laughing. Jermel playing it up casually turns. He looks around the elevator. He notices some of his employees. Knowing that he’s their boss and is feeling uncomfortable they quickly try to hide their laughter. They do so somewhat in the same manner that he did. Quickly, they turn in another direction and look up. The elevator reaches the first floor and opens. His employees still trying to hold back from laughing quickly gets out facing the opposite direction of him. The woman still making intimate gestures continues to romantically stare him up and down. She then says,

“See you, Mr. Simms!”

Surprised, he clears his throat responding,

“A—. Yeah. A—. Have a good day.”

She gets out of the elevator and waves to him. Again, trying to play it up, he skeptically smiles, and waves back. An old man who is in the elevator and observed the incident gets out. He looks at him awkwardly. Feeling that he made the woman more attracted to him he smiles, shakes his head from side to side and walks away. As the elevator door closes Jermel shakes his head from side to side. Feeling relieved, he thinks aloud,

“Business.”

The elevator opens at the parking level of the building. He gets out. As he walks towards his car, he switches his briefcase to his other hand and takes out his keys. As he comes up to it, he looks around. Quickly, he looks over the white Mercedes convertible sports coupe with dark blue leather interior. He then presses a button on his car key remote that activates certain features of the car’s computer. He enters a code into an apparatus under the car’s door handle. After opening the back door, he lays his briefcase on the back seat and closes it. After getting in he starts it up. He lets down the custom-made roof. As soon as he gets out of the garage he deeply in-hails the spring’s fresh air. Feeling relieved that the work day is over, he again breathes in the fresh air.

A few minutes’ passes. His car phone buzzes. Looking at it he presses a button that transfers all information of who’s calling to the monitor screen. After acknowledging who it is, he presses the button that activates the voice mode of the computer. He devised it.

“Yes, Mr. Simms!”

A female voice responds that presents an enthusiasm that would keep you alert towards business endeavors. It’s also a clever appeal of humor and humanitarianism that would keep you inspired towards domestic affiliations. Feeling that the present level of communication is not suitable for his endeavors he responds,

“Justine. Communication level 3S. Voice mode only.”

A zipping sound comes from the computer. It’s verifying that adjustments towards the level of communication inquired about is being made. Within a couple of seconds, the computer responds in a more energetic and humorous tone,

“Slang terminology level three is corresponding!”

It then makes a mild grumping sound that reminds you of a quick smirk of laughter.

Laughing a little, he responds,

“Jus—tine—!”

Again, the computer makes a grumping sound that reminds you of a quick smirk of laughter. Again, he laughs a little. He then responds,

“Telephone communication, audio level 4.”

“Gotcha covered!”

The computer humorously replies. Again, he laughs a little.

“Hello.”

He then says looking towards the communication device of the computer. His assistant informs him that an organization is very interested in speaking to him about establishing some business endeavors. As he comes to a red light and stops, he puts his head down. For him, it’s been a long day. He would like to do nothing better than getting home. His assistant not hearing anything from him for a few seconds skeptically responds,

“A—, sir. Are you there?”

He turns his head towards the communication device of the computer responding with some despair,

“Yes. I’m here.”

The light turns green. He continues to drive. After thinking for a few seconds, he says,

“When and where do they want to meet?”

His assistant tells him when and where they would like to meet. He looks at the clock. He then replies,

“O.k. Tell them I’ll be there.”

He acknowledges a pause and then an unsettled response. To ease the tension, he responds,

“Addison.”

“Yes sir!’

“Good work.”

“Yes, sir—!”

He then looks towards the computer saying,

“Justine. Cease communication.”

The computer ends the transmission. After thinking for a few seconds, he says,

“Call home.”

“Gotcha covered!”

The computer humorously responds. He laughs a little as he hears the computer dial the number.
