Chapter 1

“We are at war,” my mother had once told me. Of course, we have been for several years.

But that’s beside the point -- sort of.

Today was finally the day! I was old enough to leave the cavern!

The cavern is a dry, tunnel system where all of the dragons under 5 months are kept. Now, don't get me wrong, it's great. I just can't wait to get out and make my own nest.

I took one last look around the dark place in which I had once lived, before spinning around and rushing out into the forest. For the first time, the sunlight glinted off of my gray scales -- they'd be gray until I shed -- and I found myself having to squint in the harsh lighting.

Oh, I almost forgot! You're probably wondering who I am!

Well, I'm a wingless dragon, which is actually pretty common in the Silva and Flumen Weyrs. I'm apart of the Silva Weyr. It dominates most of the forests as far as the eye can see, and is led by the illusive Pax. Hardly anyone has ever seen him, but those who have say he's just as magnificent as described. Each of the three Weyrs have one distinct leader; the Mons Weyr has Regium and the Flumen Weyr has Viribus.

Anyways, so my name is Alatum. Back to our story!

As I bounced into the forest, I couldn't help but notice how quiet it seemed. I slowed to a stand-still and listened, perking my ears up. Imagine my surprise when a loud crash echoed through the forest.
