Your Smile
The first time we met I couldn't see you quite clearly because I wasn't wearing my glasses and you were standing on the opposite side of the field.
All I really remember is how confident you were, the first one to raise your hand when they asked for a volunteer.
Watching you strut around with your ass in the air was strangely impressive to me.
"Now here," I thought, "is a guy who knows how to have a good time."
I spent the next 24 hours trying to hide my shy smile from you, hoping you wouldn't notice that I laughed at every one of your jokes, regardless of how funny they were.
And suddenly we found ourselves in the same circle, and I saw for the first time the exquisite detail of your face.
The way your eyes curl when you smile, and how they shut almost completely when you laugh.
You had a hint of a beard, and I secretly hoped it was a permanent fixture and not just a result of a lack of access to a razor.
I just wanted to wrap my arms around you to see how you felt. You looked so solid and warm in your fire-engine red jacket.
You acted like such a jerk.
I loved every minute of it.
The way you teased me and made me laugh even though I didn't want to and my face already hurt from smiling so much.
And how good revenge tasted when you couldn't say a word and I finally had the upper had.
Your response was simply a sarcastically sweet smile that made my face flame and my heart melt.
It felt like you wanted me around, which was good because I liked being around you.
All I wanted was to get you alone.
Which sounds sort of suggestive, as if I'm hinting at a torrid and inevitable summer fling.
But truly, I just want to talk to you and get to know you better, and if it comes down to something more, there would be no objection on my part.
You make me happy. I always smile when you're around. And I want you to smile when you're around me.
Because I love your smile.
That great hopeful one you gave me when you found out we'd be seeing each other again.
Your little mischievous grin when we said goodbye.
As if you felt we had unfinished business.
Perhaps one night we'll get the chance to sit on some cozy blue couches and sort each other out.
And maybe I'll get to see your gorgeous smile at least once more.
