The beginning
When a child was born, there was a process. The Birthmother would be sent off to the other side of the building with a prescription, supposedly taken to relieve the pain. The Laborers would take the child off to a lab. Once the child is cleaned, they would take a single skin cell from the newborn and place it in a frozen chamber for another purpose. The newborn was then injected with a special formula that blunts the intelligence and sight. The child can no longer see in color, and they cannot learn or remember as efficiently. The child would then be placed in a special chamber, designed to control the breath and heartbeat of the newborn until it was ready to be placed in a family.
However, the injection blunt isn't always effective. There are some children that were born with a mutation. This mutation allowed the child to overcome the injection and see flashes of color around them. The IQ slowly regenerates, and they begin to experience flashbacks; memories of before they were even born. These mutations, although sometimes on purpose, were considered dangerous to the community and the peace enveloping them. These newborn became known as the Chosen ones, and the Elders, being the leaders of the Utopian community, decided to place these in secured families that could prepare them for whatever use the Elders had in mind. However, the extent of the child's mutated abilities varied. Any child that became out of the controlled range would be sent to a white cell with no escape, even powerful as they are. There was one newborn, though, that got away. A Laborer looked at her steel gray eyes and knew the injection could never work. There was something there; a new sense of power, leadership. Even as a newborn, there seemed to be a strong aura enveloping her, thick and full enough to be palpable. He had worked in the business long enough to know the protocols, but he couldn't bring himself to call the Elders. The baby seemed too innocent; too forgiving. He decided to inject the baby and send her away, even though she was a Chosen One, and therefore would not be affected by the medication swirling through her veins.
He didnt tell anyone about his findings. The Laborer knew there would be consequences if anyone found out, but he wasn't too worried about that. He chuckled softly.
"Welcome to the family, Katherine", he said.
