This is definitely not your typical story from a villain’s point of view.
This is also not your typical superhero teen fiction novel.
What this is a little bit of comedy, a little bit of drama, some teen angst, a pinch of pop culture and haute couture references, add in a bit of hip-hop and R&B, and you got a bit of a potpourri of contradictions. But that’s just my life in a nutshell. So sue me if you must.
Now, I’m going to be very brunt with you. This is going to go over your head and your imaginations if you’re not into this type of thing, hearing a villain’s life story that is unlike any other. Some villains get their happy ending at the end while remaining rotten to the core. Others have theirs cut short, the hero always triumphant in the end. But for me, well, let’s just say that there is definitely more beyond what meets the eye. So if this isn’t your style, you are free to walk away now while the getting is good and golden. But hear me out. I promise you that there is a three-part metamorphosis that is beyond physical and mental. You’ll laugh, cry, be inspired, and want to put on some good music (hip-hop, old school rap, R&B, and some rock music is definitely recommended).
And another thing. This story right here celebrates underdogs, just like the other stories written by this author right here. I can tell you that he has a lot going on and is taking a big chance doing this, writing stories featuring main characters of color. Not only that, he is a self-professed, superhero-loving, pop-culture-contradicting nerd in his own way. And in the end, this is for the nerds in high school, the loners, the rebels, for everyone rejected by the popular kids at school. And this is also for those who have suffered emotional and mental bullying by those who think that they are better than us. Let me make one thing clear. If the above doesn’t describe for you and/or you could care less about the above, then you really don’t need to bother reading this. Just walk away while you can. The rest of you? Chante, you stay.
But enough about that. I want you all to take a minute to grab some snacks (beignets if you represent Louisiana, though donuts work too), fill your cup with a drink of your choice (chicory-spiced coffee if you’re from Louisiana, Coca-Cola if you represent the Southeast), put on your favorite music playlist (Sade or Janelle Monae is an excellent choice), lock the door, lower the blinds, and get ready for a kiki that you’ll never want to forget.
As the British usually say before starting a musical, are you seated comfortably? Then we’ll begin. Translation: Are you ready? Then here we go!
