Summary

Kymere's big, golden eyes stared with wonder at the beautiful creature soaring through the sky. ❝If I try, can I soar like that bird too?❞ She thought The first time Kymere opened her eyes was probably the worst day of her life. She woke up surrounded by unusual creatures she's never seen before. It took her a while to realize the adults who were raising her and her strange siblings weren't their real parents. They were adopted. To the rest of the siblings, being raised by such rude and ignorant parents was hell. To Kymere, who is pretty oblivious about her own foster parents, life was life and thought she had to feel grateful for being cared for nonetheless, even if the ones caring for her spat at her for getting too close. One night, however, Kymere has an accident that leaves her with one eye. She gets punished for being "foolish and unaware" and gets forced to stay in her burrow tobleed until her wound becomes infected. Her siblings thought it was cruel to punish a young fox in such a way, so they eventually snuck out together. Even after having the wound tended to, Kymere felt unfamiliar with the outside world. Especially because the safest optionfor all the siblings was to nomad. They all face great threats and are forced to split up when humans invade their hideout.

Prologue

Two young foxes walked alongside each other on the vast moorland that was bathed in a golden color from the rising sun. The spiky blades of grass danced with the occasional breeze, as well as the fluffy pelts of the two foxes.

One fox, who was called Tiya, was letting a tiny black kit dangle from her jaws. The kit was somehow asleep despite the wind that sang in her ears, whispering like a morning alarm.

The male fox beside Tiya spoke, his deep voice shattering the calmness of silence. "Are you sure about this, Tiya?" He asked, referring to their plan about giving their daughter to a close friend because the couple was too busy to care for her.

Tiya nodded, reassuring by replying with "I thought about this since day one. We'll be nomading all the time. It would be too much to ask for our daughter to keep up with us all the time. Plus, the mother who will raise her just lost her biological daughter. This kit, along with the other kits, will cheer her up as a mother."

"I'm still skeptical. I mean, yeah, Acahlia has a kind personality, but she gets really fired up when she's provoked often." The male replied with a lame flick of his tail. "Maybe," Tiya replied. "But only when she's provoked. She wouldn't dare get mad at a tiny ball of fluff like this one right here." She said, gesturing with one of her paws at the kit in her jaws.

The couple walked for some time until they came across a burrow that was made next to a calm pond that reflected the soft glow of the rising sun. Tiya looked quite worried despite the numerous times she told herself this is the best way.

"Hey, Acahlia? We brought you something..or someone." Tiya called. After a few moments, a low grunt echoed from the burrow. "Fine, I'm coming up." The tone sounded harsh and unsatisfied.

Soon enough, Tiya noticed a large figure moving closer and closer out of the burrow. It was Acahlia-- and she looked very displeased at the sight of the kit before her.

Acahlia growled. "So you dumbasses woke me up early in the morning to bring me another mistake to deal with?" She hissed, flattening her ears as she examined the small body. Tiya was surprised. Acahlia was usually happy to see another kit.

"Tch," she said nonetheless. "Boy or girl?" She asked. "Girl. We've decided to call her Kymere." Tiya replied.

Acahlia laughed mockingly. "Oh, so you're naming the brat you're about to abandon? No, sweetie. I'll be deciding names. I'll call her Kai."

Tiya looked away with annoyance and a little hurt, but didn't show it too much. "Whatever," she said. "Just take the damn thing and leave." After that, Acahlia just grunted, picked up the frail kit and headed down into the burrow without another word.
