Preface
A few of my classmates and I participated together in National Novel Writing Month in April 2018. This short story was originally meant to be one of 12 short stories for an anthology, but I ended up only writing one of them. But, hey, I’d rather write 12 quality short stories in 12 months than a dozen mediocre ones in a day. A lot of inspiration for this short story came from sci-fi shows like “Black Mirror”, “The Twilight Zone”, and “The Outer Limits”. However, the inspiration of this story is derived mainly from a story my father told me. One day, during the dawn of the smartphone revolution, while traveling on the train downtown, he looked around to discover with awe an eerie revelation: that everyone was engulfed in their phones, except for him and his flip phone. To quote my dad, “It felt like being in the Twilight Zone”. I thought it’d be cool to do a dystopian twist on his experience.
