Chapter 1
“Genesis Tavoularis”
I stand up taking my bag, straightening my skirt as I stepped into the office. A woman around my age with long blond locks sits behind a table that is perfectly organised.
“Hello, I’m Dr Alisha Xavier. Please take a seat” she says, adjusting her coat and motioning toward a chair.
“Hello, how are you doing today?” I ask
“I’m fine, thank you for asking. What can I do for you today, Ms Tavoularis?”
“I’ve been quite sick lately and I’m worried it’s not just mild flu. I’ve missed my period for the past two months, so I suspected I was pregnant. I have taken several pregnancy tests and there were a few positive and few negatives. I’m here to find out what’s going on if I’m actually pregnant or it’s something else.”
“Well Ms Tavoularis, Pregnancy tests aren’t as accurate. So, there might be a possibility that you are pregnant. How about we get a blood test done?. Pregnancy can also be detected or confirmed through the blood test.”
“Sure”
“Okay, please make yourself comfortable to on the bed, won’t be too long,” she asks, taking a few documents with her and which I’m assuming are my previous medical records.
.........
Today was hectic. I woke up this morning only to empty my stomach out. While my best friend and roommate Daya runs over to see if I needed any help.
Daya Romanov, my best friend of ten years and my Roommate. I met Daya when she and her family moved into the house next to ours. We had instantly connected and hung out almost every day. From there it led to ′mi casa su casa′ and our parents becoming best friends.
After my parent’s passing, I was a mess. Besides my brothers, Daya was the only one there for me. She’s been there for me through it all, including numerous hangovers.
Daya comes from a pretty well off family but she chose to make something of herself, a person who’s hired for her potential and experience. She’s an English Literature Professor at Stanford University.
Well, back on me describing my horrible day. Then came my visit to the hospital, which was pretty quick. After which I went around town looking for a daytime job before I started my night-shift as a waitress.
A few days later
As I browse through my email, I hesitate to open the email that could either ruin me and change my life for the worse or it could just give me the good news I’m hoping for – a mild cold.
~ Miss Tavoularis,
Congratulations. According to your blood samples, you are indeed pregnant. We have also found that there is a little less Iron in your body than the normal amount, but there’s not harming to worry about. An official hard copy of your results can be sent posted to you if you wish so. I have also attached the soft copy of your results and prescribed medications to make sure you and your baby are perfectly fine to this email.
You might want to book your next appointment according to your schedule.
Again, we at the All Saint’s Hospital would like to congratulate you.
regards,
Dr. Alisha Xavier
I stare at the information, shocked beyond all measures. I was expecting this, but I still hoped that it could be different.
Abortion- that had crossed my mind, but I couldn’t do that. All my life I’ve been taught repeatedly that I need to own up, that I need to bear the consequences and take responsibility for what I have I done. And I’m going to do just that.
But the main concern right now is, how am I going to inform my Family about this?! How on Earth am I going to inform the father of my child?
