Chapter 1
This is a story about how and why I cheated on my wife. It includes everything from our first meeting, to how we fell in love, to how we eventually drifted apart.
I still remember I was traveling to this small town, it didn’t have much, a sawmill, a small blacksmith, a small bar cum lodge and a small pawn shop owned and operated by two siblings.
As I arrived in town I got to talking with the bar owner, he told me about some local legends and some gossip. Apparently, the pawn shop owners sister was involved in a love triangle with two men, one was a hunter and the other was a guitarist or musician. Both men wanted her jealousy.
After I arrived in town it was already late, so I decided to stay at the lodge until the next day. I went out for a walk around town before retiring for the night, and this is where the first of the two men approached me. It was the guitarist.
Him: “hey friend, are you new in town?”
Me: “yes”
Him: “may I ask a favor of you?”
Me: “sure, if it's something small”
Him: “can you deliver this letter to the woman at the pawn shop?”
ME: “sure, it's it a love letter haha”
HIm: “something like that”
Me: “I see, haha, I was about to drop by the shop anyway, ill make sure to deliver it!”
Him: “Thanks”
This was about how our conversation went. From there on he went on to the bar/lodge and I started walking towards the pawn shop, but curiosity took over me. I wanted to read what secret letter this small town musician was sending to his sweetheart at night! It was too exciting to pass up, not to mention there was no other source of entertainment in that small town.
I hesitated for a moment thinking “is it right to read someones else’s mail?” but quickly convinced myself that “he wouldn’t trust a complete stranger with the letter if it was something important or personal...right?”
With that I sat down along the road and opened the letter, it was just written on a piece of paper and shoved in an envelope, no glue, no seal or anything. I pulled the letter out and was surprised to find out that it was a hateful letter, addressed to the pawnshop owners sister, and the sender was marked as THE HUNTER!
I realized that Mr. small town musician was trying to send a fake hate letter from the hunter, his rival to the girl in hopes of ruining the hunters' chances with her. Now I was no saint, but i despised underhanded tactics. I decided to first meet this hunter and see whether he deserved this or if he was a nice young man.
I asked around for the hunter and found out that he was just outside town, hunting some rabbits. I found him and talked to him for a bit. He turned out to be a very nice man. I decided i would not turn on him.
I did go the the pawn shop later. As i entered the shop i saw the siblings arguing about something. Apparentl,y their shop had been burgled recently and a family heirloom was stolen.
They stopped arguing once i came in, the sister just sat down and the brother started asking what i wanted. I tried to see if anything i had would fetch any price since i was at a pawn shop after all, to my disappointment nothing i had was worth anything.
I talked with the shopowner a bit, he told me how valuable the heirloom was to him and his family and how he would pay well to have it back. I saw an opportunity. I wasn’t in any hurry to leave town, and he offered to pay really well! I inquired about the details of the burglar from him and told him i would try to investigate. It doesn’t hurt to have some extra money while travelling anyway.
Apparently, the robbers had last been seen heading to the ruins on the outskirts of the town, this was a known camping place for the scum of town.
I had all my information, after i was done talking to the brother, i delivered the letter to the sister, this was also the first time i got a good look at her. By god was she gorgeous! I did deliver the letter, but made sure to tell her who i got it from, she figured out the rest and explicitly asked me to tell the musician to never talk to her ever again. I was barely able to hold my laughter back.
i headed back to the hunter to tell him what had happened, i told him to make sure he knew he owed me a favor. He was delighted to hear what i did for him and gave me some money. He even game me some tips on hunting. I then told him about the burglary and asked for his help in trying to locate the missing heirloom.
The next day i went to the pawn shop and asked for directions to the thugs hangout. The sister gladly came out and informed me of the location, she asked if she could come with, but i declined.
I then went to the hunter and had him accompany me. We walked for a while and came upon a band of thugs, but the hunter was quick to notice that these were not the burglars we were looking for as the ones who burglarized the pawn shop were experts.
We avoided the thugs and moved on. After some more walking, we came upon the abandoned buildings, this is where we saw a variety of thugs, not sure where our guy was we just started asking around.
Mr.hunter asked around and i followed close behind. Somebody told us that the guy we were looking for had died due to a spider byte and nobody wanted to touch his body, he told us it was in the basement and we could check it out if we wanted to.
I was half expecting to get murdered there but the hunter gave me courage. We walked into the basement and sure enough, there was a guy lying on the floor, he didn’t seem to be moving and it was safe to assume he was dead given the smell that was emanating from his carcass.
The hunter quickly patted the body down and found the heirloom, he recognized it as he frequented the pawn shop to catch a glimpse of his sweetheart.
By sheer luck, we had our objective. with that we brisked out of that place as fast as we could. i thought there would be some quarrel between me and the hunter regarding the reward money for returning the heirloom but he forfeited his share because he “didn’t want to take money from his love”. He was so sweet i almost threw up in my mouth.
I for one was never someone to turn down money, i grew up in poverty and knew how hard it could be to sleep with an empty stomach. I told the hunter to go back to his house and i would go and claim the reward. I also asked to stay over at his house as i didn’t want to pay for the room at the lodge, and what are friends for right?
I gave the heirloom back and it was a delight to see the smile it bought on the sisters face. For the first time i felt something for a woman. Before this i had only been intimate with “professionals”, pay and play was my motto. But this woman made my heart race with just her smile!
Her: “Thank you so much, how did you get it back?” in excitement.
Me: “It wasn’t easy, but I couldn’t bear to see you sad.” Perhaps the cheesiest like I ever uttered to impress a girl.
Her: “How could we ever repay you?”
ME: “you could tell me your name”
Her: “its camellia” while blushing like a rose
But it worked I guess, she giggled. Then blushed.
Her: “so, did you do this by yourself?” she asked
Me: “of course, maybe ill tell you all about it one day, but I’m tired now” turning to the brother I continued “may I have my reward now?”
The Brother: “of course, you can have anything you want. didn’t you say you would be traveling to the city soon? take some wine with you as well!” i grabbed a couple of bottles and the cash reward. And went to the hunter’s place with a smile on my face.
The hunter asked what camellia thought about his heroic act of saving the family heirloom, I just lied to him about how she didn’t care and never asked about it.
Then we had dinner and retired for the night.
-----chapter 2------
The next day i had to leave for the city. With a heavy heart i said goodbye to camellia. I really wanted to stay longer, even if just to gaze at her for a bit longer, but work called. Not to mention i had no experience in wooing women, all the women i had ever been with until that point were “workers” all i needed to woo them was money. Now that i was faced with a real girl, one that wasn’t helpless, one that had a job and didn’t want my money, i was clueless.
I set forth for the town with camellia waving me goodbye. Surprisingly the hunter came to say goodbye as well. I guess small town people really are simpletons.
It wasn’t a long way to the city from the from the town and the road along the was was beautiful.
I arrived at the city just in time to see some vigilantes beating up a criminal. I ran over to see it up close and while i was trying to wade through the crowd the criminal started sprinting my way, i simply tripped him over by kicking his leg and he fell over face down. hahaha. every one started laughing.
One of the vigilantes approached me with an offer to join their gang. i told them i’d think about it. with this done i walked over into the city. Crime was no shocker in or about the city and bounty hunters were common here.
When i got into town i saw a fruit stall and went over to buy something, just as i approached the stall i noticed it was manned by a very attractive, albeit older woman. She was being harassed by a drunk, he walked away after i came in front of the shop mumbling.
Her: “sorry for that, how can I help you?”
Me: “don’t be, it’s not your fault. was that your husband?”
Her: “lord no, just the local pub singer, he harasses me all the time, my husband passed away some time age, now all I have is my daughter”
Me: “that’s terrible, I was raised by a single mom as well. ill go over to the pub later and talk to him”
Her: “oh you don’t need to, this is common for me”
Me: “it shouldn’t be!”
Her: “I cant ask you to get in trouble for me”
Me: “I’m just doing what I want, nothing to do with you”
I bought some apples from her nad then went over to the pub. Had a few drinks and then asked the singer to leave the woman alone. He was quite a bit drunker than me and started throwing punches in the air, I beat him up quite good, he could barely stand, after all, it was like taking candy from a baby.
The fruit stall owner thanked me later after I told her I took care of her problem.
After this, i got caught up in some work and had to be off to another neighboring city.
In this city poverty and crime was rampant. Orphans were abundant and the sewers were brim full of filth.
I found my way to a lodge, it was understaffed and a little messy but would do for the night. It was run by two sisters, the older sister ran the place while the younger one did the small chores. Somehow I ended up in bed with the owners, it had been quite some time since I last engaged in intimacy but despite being embraced by the warm loins of a very attractive woman, all I could think about was camellia and her smile.
I found out about a small church in this city, it was a church that specialized in weddings. They told me at the church that they sold unisex amulets that single people could wear to let everyone know they are looking for a mate. The idea seemed like a gimmick to me, stupid and clearly a scheme to siphon money from poor lonely people, especially given the prize of the damn thing. But I still bought one, thinking of camellia.
After my work was done in the city I went straight back to town to meet camellia, proudly wearing the amulet on my chest.
I had little faith in the amulet or churches or magic but the hope is a terrible drug. It can show you dreams more vivid and fantastical than any other substance!
I walked into the pawn shop hoping to see camellia, and as soon as I entered she was there. Sweeping the shop floor. As beautiful as ever.
She noticed me immediately and came right up to talk.
we talked a bit about my travels and then she finally asked,
her: “are you just wearing that amulet or do you know what it means?”
Me: “haha I know, it means I’m single”
Her: “oh, I thought someone like you would be taken by now” she was blushing ear to ear as she said that.
Me: “not really, haven’t found anyone like you”
Her: “oh, what about me?” she asked very excited.
I was dumb founded, did she actually propose to me?
Me: “umm I would ...no I want umm yea YES” I could barely continue.
After that, she gave me a small gift and said “This doesn’t mean we’re engaged or anything.” hahaha.
She started laughing after that and so did i. We went on a few dates after that and after I bought a house in the city, we decided to get married.
-------chapter 3--------
We had a small ceremony, only a few close friends, and relatives. But it was the happiest day of my life! Just standing there at the altar by her side meant the world to me. Again, seeing her smile at me made me forget the world.
After our wedding, we moved in together for the first time. It was amazing!
She would call me “my love”, nobody had ever said that to me before her and nobody has said it since.
Our marriage was great! In the beginning at least. I remember I would come back home from work tired and she would greet me with “hello my love”, for the first time in my life, I felt at home.
We argued over small things every now and then too:
Her: “why don’t you wear the clothes I bough you and get a decent haircut?”
ME: “and should I put on some makeup while I’m at it too? I’m a man, men should care about that stuff”
Her: “where did you even learn that from? look I’m asking for your own good, nobody would help a poor looking fellow if he was bleeding out on the road, but a well dressed rich man might get many helping hands”
We argued about too many things, but she would always win. But I didn’t lose, if anything the only things I lost during our arguments were doubts about our marriage. The more we argued the closer we became.
After a while I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror, the selfish, sad, lonely me was nowhere to be found. What I saw in the mirror was a happily married man!
She would bake me pies, they were delicious and always made me feel happy and grin like an idiot when I ate them.
And of course, there was the lovemaking. With camellia it was different than ever before, it didn’t feel carnal, it didn’t feel like a chore, I didn’t just want to be done with it. I wanted to feel every small thing, explore and memorize everything about her, experiment and observe, what she liked, how she liked, it was almost as if I was only focused on her rather than my own groin. I loved her. With her, making love was like communication, telling her I love her physically. Like an extreme version of a hug. For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel tired after the deed, I didn’t feel exhausted, I didn’t feel like I needed a bath. I felt like cuddling. I would wake up early just to see her peaceful sleeping face. I would cook for her sometimes just to surprise her. I would bring her flowers, just to see her lovely, mesmerizing smile. For the first time in my life, I trusted someone.
For her I needed to be better, so I started working longer, I wanted to buy her everything she wanted, everything she deserved, for being the most important person in the world! So, I started working late, and far, I would only be able to come back home on weekends. But I didn’t care, all the exhaustion of an entire week of work would be whisked away by hearing one sentence from her beautiful mouth, “Hello, my love” with her gentle smile on her face.
After a while camellia suggested that she should set up a small pawn shop at home, she asked for money to do so and I gave it to her without a second thought. She said that she got bored staying at home all day and that she wanted to support me. She could have chosen to be pampered by me and never work. She could have chosen to demand more of me, but instead, she tried to support me. It was moments like this where I realized that our love was true. That she would never betray me.
But,......
Things changed. It happened so gradually that it nearly escaped me.
One day, she just stopped making pies for me,
One day, she just stopped she just stopped sleeping in the same bed with me,
One day, she just stopped smiling at me, and
I believe one day, she stopped loving me.
My heart sank into my chest as I realized what was happening. I was away all the time and she was working all day, she rarely ever smiled at me even though she smiled at every single customer at her work, she stopped smiling at me. Perhaps I now meant less than a stranger to her. I wouldn’t be surprised, she did see her customers more often than me.
One night I cooked for her before she came back from work. It made her smile, it was a nostalgic smile, a tired smile, but beneath all the fatigue and unspoken sorrow, it was the same smile that made me fall in love with her all that time ago in that little town.
We had lunch, we talked about our days, she told me she loved that I came back to see her, that I cooked for her. We started playfully kicking each other under the dinner table, and after nearly a year, we embraced each other.
I had forgotten the warmth of her body, truly it had been too long. I had not slept with another since our marriage, and I knew she hadn’t either.
I thought about finding work close by, but I couldn’t just start making less money! My male pride would not allow for that to happen.
During all this I ended up in the same city me and my wife got married, there I still saw many orphans, running around, playing, looking at me from behind the trees.
I and camellia never talked about kids, we never the got chance I guess. But I knew camellia wanted a child. We didn’t have the time to conceive given our busy lives, adoption could be just the answer we were looking for!
I didn’t discuss it with camellia, but I knew she would accept any child I brought home as her own.
so I adopted a young girl, about 10 years old. I was a bit difficult to adopt even in a city overrun with orphans, but I managed.
I came back with our new daughter to Meet with camellia. Our daughter was excited beyond description to meet her new mother. She was a sweet child. She would hold my hand while sleeping, sometimes she held it very tightly, maybe she was afraid I would abandon her. Funnily enough, I only adopted her because I was afraid my wife would abandon me!
When camellia came back I told her about the girl. She was overjoyed! We had a wonderful time that night. Just talking and getting to know each other.
Camellia and I didn’t make love that night, but we slept in the same bed, with our bodies as close to each other as possible. She hugged me in her sleep, and she told me after a very long time that she loved me.
That night I realized something,
One day, I stopped bringing flowers for camellia,
One day, I stopped cooking for her,
One day, I stopped joyously lifting her up and spinning her,
One day.... One day I stopped saying I love you to her,
One day i ...I stopped taking time for her.
She loved me the same, I loved her the same, but we stopped saying it, and it made us drift so far apart that her breath on my neck was a foreign feeling to me.
The distance that I had unintentionally made between us had given me the most precious gift, the gift of humility!
I finally understood what it was, it wasn’t me always being away, or her working, or anything else. It was simply the little things, that we did for each other, that made us love each other even more, that reinforced our love for each other, that let the other person know... “hey... I love you”.
The next day, I bought some fine new clothes for my daughter, and I picked up some flowers along the way for camellia. I wanted to make a change. I wanted to take the first step, if camellia never took the first step, we probably wouldn’t even be married today.
Funnily enough, I felt as nervous as a teen going to his first date taking those flowers for my wife. I didn’t know what she would think of them, of this. Maybe she would think I was being immature, maybe, she hates it “oh now you remember to bring me flowers, after all this time?” what if she said that? I was worried as a cornered rat.
When I arrived at home I gave my daughter her new clothes, and I took camellia by hand to the bedroom and gave her the flowers I had bought for her. She started smiling like a dame. It made me feel butterflies in my stomach, seeing her smile.
From then on I started looking for work closer to home, so I could spend more time with my wife and daughter. The both of them were getting along nicely.
My daughter was growing up fast, and spoiled! she would demand new clothes, dolls or pocket money every time I came back home. Never asking about my day, or telling me that she loved me. But I didn’t mind, I loved her all the same. She was my daughter after all.
My relationship with camellia was healing as well. We were talking more often, joking more often, sleeping more often. it seemed like our daughter had bridged the gap between us.
One day I decided to surprise my wife by coming home during a weekday instead of the weekend. I wanted to be sitting in the house when camellia came back from work and spend some time alone with her before our little angel came back home.
I had flowers in my hand, some wine and cheese in my bag and excitement on my face.
But when I arrived home I was frozen at the front door. Inside I heard laughter, of my wife... and another man. I couldn’t move, I couldn’t even breath. I didn’t know what to do, it felt like my mind had left my body stranded in the middle of the road.
Then, I finally came to my senses and peeked through the door. Inside I found Camellia smiling the same smile that I loved, that was only for me, that meant the world to me, but it wasn’t for me this time, she was smiling at Hunter, he was standing in my kitchen, Cooking, humming, mixing.
I opened the door and came inside. As soon as I entered the house the looks on both hunter’s and camellia’s faces turned to dread.
“l..love, you’re home early, what happened? you didn’t tell me you were coming home..” she uttered hesitantly.
“Hunter was in town and happened upon my shop, we were just catching up” she blurted out hurriedly.
We all sat down for a meal. A meal I did not cook, in a house, i did not know. Sitting beside people I did not recognize. Sitting at the table, looking, here. there.., searching, trying to find my love, my wife or years, who would not betray me, who could not betray me. I looked her right in the eye but she didn’t meet my gaze, not during the entire lunch. Her smile had disappeared.
Some part of me still wanted to trust her, some part of me still wanted to believe her absurd excuse. A Bleeding part. A dying part.
Hunter left as soon as he was done eating.
And then I went into our bedroom, to find the bedsheets still wet, the bedding still dented, and messy. It was a marriage bed, But not mine.
I walked out of the house that day. I didn’t come back until circumstances forced me to.
Somehow hunter had disappeared, hah, seems unfortunate but then again, its nothing uncommon happens all the time. People disappear right.. happens all the time. Probably just lost in the woods while hunting. He was a dear friend, I was umm sad to hear that he had gone missing. you know we had our differences, what with him cheating with my wife and destroying my very life, that I had built up for years, taking my wife and my child from me, taking my marriage from me which I had worked... tried so hard to save. Well, what can you do, some people just disappear... some people deserve it.
The news that came after was even more devastating. camellia had been found dead in our house, bludgeoned to death, it made me really sad. She didn’t deserve that just for lying to me, ruining my life, cheating on me, making me waste half my life, and crushing my very soul to pieces. But what can you do, wives cheat all the time, and people get killed by robbers all the time as well, what can you do.... :)
