A New Start
Roslyn lay awake on her bed, feeling alone. Her small house in the mountains was quiet, but since she was the only one that lived here it was big, but still alone. Roslyn had lived here since fourth grade, when her parents disappeared, when they left her and had left no note, no explanation. They just left.
Her stomach rumbled and she rolled over on one side, and she grumbled. Then she rolled again and fell off her bed. Since she fell off every morning it didn’t hurt. Slowly she got to her feet and walked to her marble bathroom counter just across the room. Her chestnut brown hair was in a tangled mess, her French tips were bouncing all around like a circus. She examined her tan skin, and sighed at the sight of her arm, the hairs on her arm were static and were sticking up.
Roslyn shivered a bit, even though she was in fleece pajamas and fluffy slippers. She quickly brushed her hair and teeth. When she was finished, she half sleepwalked to her drawers. Roslyn grabbed a pair of white jeans, a sleeveless tank, and a plaid. Wearing this jacket gave her memories of her mom, since in fact this was her jacket. She felt a cold shiver down her spine like someone was tickling her with icy fingers.
She walked over to her small jewelry box and picked up her mom’s charm bracelet in one hand, and her father’s dagger in the other hand. She tossed her father’s dagger in the air a couple times and caught it by the blade. Her mom’s charm bracelet was a rose gold color and it shined in the morning sun.
The charm bracelet had three charms. One was a small silver camera, with engraved words from her mother. It read “We will always be with you.” Her mom had repeatedly told her this even though she doubted it sometimes, her parents had just packed up and left. The other two charms were a cross and a small miniature heart. Every time she picked up her mom’s bracelet memories rushed to her head.
Now her father’s dagger brought different memories, they were good though. Every week she took her father’s dagger to her dresser and drew a messy mark on her dresser. Since she was eleven it had been around one hundred fifty five weeks since they had left. Today was the day they officially had left, this day was very emotional in one way. On this day there were so many holes that her parent had not filled, and then they just left. Tears started rolling down her cheeks. She quickly set down her father’s dagger and walked over to her calendar.
As she scanned for March twenty seventh, when she found it she read what it said. It said… Meet Kendall for a picnic. Roslyn racked her brain trying to remember if she told Kendall she would meet her there, instead she just slipped on her black boots and walked out the door.
