Prologue

The ringing of a phone woke Kate. Turning to her side clock, she notated it was 3:30 AM. Rubbing her eyes, she answered the phone in her groggy voice.

"Hello?" she sounded like death.

"Is this Katherine Marie Grey?" asked a female with a monotone.

"Who is this?" Kate asked confused and anxious at the same time.

"This is Doctor Remington at St. Grace's hospital, is it possible for you to come down at this time?" the doctor asked, sounding as though she was picking her words carefully.

"What's going? How did you get my number?"

"I will have a police officer escort you to the hospital, Miss. I'm sure you have questions and I will answer all of them but for now, please get ready and meet the officer." The doctor begged.

Kate knew something was wrong in the pit of her stomach. She immediately leaped out of bed, throwing on a sweater and pulling on her jeans at the same time.

Going back to the bed, she grabs her and phone and dials her brother's number. After several rings and no answer, she calls her sister-in-law hoping beyond hopes, she picks up. but she's met with the voicemail instantly.

With no time to react and call anyone, she hears a loud banging on her door.

She numbly walks out of her apartment and comes face to face with a police officer. Everything is in a blur and is passing through a haze. With so many thoughts running through her mind, she finds herself in the back seat of the cop car and is being driven to the hospital. Grateful that the officer hadn't initiated any conversations with her.

Finally stepping foot in the hospital, she's met by the doctor at the front entrance.
"Miss. Grey?" Asked a female doctor in a white coat with black scrubs and hair wild like it's a birds nest.
Kate gingerly nodded her head quickly. Anxious and scared beyond anything else.

"Miss. Grey, would you please walk with me to my office?" the doctor asks as she's already walking in the direction of her office and is dragging Kate by the small of her back.

"What's going on, is it my bother? Is Cecile alright? Just fucking tell me what's going on already!" she exclaimed with hot tears rolling down her blotched cheeks.

Turning into a secluded corner, the doctor pulls Kate by her shoulders and lets her rest her back on the wall.

"Listen to me very carefully. Yes, this is in regards to your bother and his wife. They were brought in here about an hour ago with severe injuries. They're both in surgery right now. And we're doing whatever we can in our powers to help save their lives." The doctor said in whisper, as though speaking any louder might break her.

"What? How? When? Why? Why them?" Kate fired questions, shaking her head in absolute shock.

"No, it can't be them. You have the wrong people. Please make sure you call their families. They're not mine." Kate said, trying to walk away from the doctor.

"Your sister-in-law is pregnant, correct? And your brother has a heart shaped birthmark on his inner wrist?"asked the doctor.

She instantly halts in her steps, slowly turning around.

But instead of hot tears this time, she collapses on the floor.
