The sound of glass breaking brings me out of my sleep.

I turn to look at the clock.

3:21a

Sighing I slide out from under the covers and quietly walk to my bedroom door and crack it open. Rubbing a hand over my face, I lean against the wall and listen to the voices argue with each other. My father is drunk again, no surprise there.

It was always like this.

I rub the back of my neck and head down the stairs as I hear muffled thuds and more glass breaking.

I was always the one to break them apart.

This is so stupid.

When I reach the bottom I am met with a room that has been torn to pieces.

Literally.

Couch cushions are torn apart and their stuffing is laying strewn from one side of the room to the other. Glass is everywhere and I’m glad I am wearing my slippers. Cabinet doors are open and some of them are hanging off the hinges. The tv has a hole smashed through the center and the speaker covers are slit down the middle. I flinch when my father staggers into view. He has my mother by her hair and she is crying quietly, not wanting to anger him farther.

“Where the fuck is it?” he growls

She closes her eyes and stays silent. His eyes harden and the grip on her hair tightens before he throws a punch to her face, and then he can’t stop. He is hitting her repeatedly, not a sound comes out of my mothers mouth as her eyes lock with mine. They are begging me to go back upstairs and ignore what I am seeing. Before I have a chance to think, I am sprinting towards the two of them. I launch myself at my father and he lands on the ground, grunting in surprise. I roll away from him and rush to my mother, who has collapsed in exhaustion. I check her pulse quickly and then turn to face my father. He staggers up from the ground, his face a blank mask. I dodge the punch he throws in my direction and lash out in return with my foot, catching him in the ribs. He growls and launches his body at me, throwing me to the ground. His hand grips my throat and holds me in place as he hauls back and repeatedly hits me. My vision is slowly going dim when his weight is suddenly gone. I pull up into sitting position, groggily. My mother is locked in a fierce battle of dominance. A flash catches my eye and then everything is in slow motion.

My mother is thrown to the ground.

My father is holding her down.

The cold gleam of a knife.

The blood.

Its everywhere.

Its warm.

It stinks.

I turn and empty my stomach next to me before forcing myself to look back at the corpse that used to be my mother.

My father is breathing heavily and slowly stands to his feet. Blood splatters his face and drips from his hands. My eyes widen as a giggle escapes his lips.

He’s gone mad.

“Why does she have to be so difficult? She made me do that to her...”

His bloodshot eyes focus on me and he smiles at me. Walking over to where I sat frozen on the ground, he crouches in front of me, the metallic stench fills my nose.

“My little Jae-Hwa, you’ll be so much better than your mother. She didn’t want you to be my heir but I know you’ll be just fine. You’re strong enough. My little baby....when did you get so big?” He coos at me and pats my head.

Suddenly there is a sharp pain at the back of my head and everything goes black.
