The First Lie
I woke up to the sound of water slowly dripping. My eyes are still closed but my brain is already processing the throbbing pain it is feeling. When I tried to open my eyes, flashes of neon lights swarm into view and it hurts so much that I have to close them again. I wish I could just go back to sleep. I hummed the first rhythm that came to mind, a rhythm even I can’t remember. As I was about to drift into a shallow sleep, my body jerked into a sitting position so instant that I barely felt the needles attached to my arm leaving my skin.
I just remembered,
I don’t remember anything,
The skin on my right arm is red and bleeding from where the needle w. The dripping water is actually a pastel blue colored fluid in what seems like dextrose that’s attached to the needle and hose I just got rid of. I don’t need to look around the rest of the room to know that I am in a hospital. But something is quite not right, the smell doesn’t smell like a hospital should.
The doors burst open and about four people entered the room at the same time. Three people wearing white robes and face masks and one man wearing a rather comfortable looking outfit it almost looks like he was asleep a second ago. As a defense mechanism, I held the only solid thing near me, a vase.
“Please relax dear, we are really relieved you are now awake.” The nearest doctor to me said calmly.
“Don’t come closer or…. or I will hit you.” I know I look pathetic and helpless with a vase in hand. But I have to use what I have. I really don’t know why the idea of doctors rushing to me in a hospital when I woke up seems like something I needed to defend myself from. My vision is all fuzzy but I could see the man at the back nodding, looking very pleased.
“Where am I? Wh.. who are you?! Stay back! I said stay back!!” I held the vase high, ready to swing it to whoever steps forward first.
“Vital signs stable, blood pressure normal, physical traumas seem to have faded, I would require a psychiatric and psychological evaluation.” The female one said. She could not hide the hint of distaste in her voice more than she tries to.
“There will be no need for that Doctor Shane, thank you very much. The Vaiya I know wouldn’t hurt a single fly.” The man at the back said.
Vaiya? Is that my name? I tried very hard to remember, but nothing. “Vaiya” simply doesn’t ring any bell. Who is this guy? And how did he know me? 10 minutes after waking up and I wish I hadn’t.
The third doctor who is farthest from me shifted into view and tried to calm me down. “Ms. Vaiya please don’t rush things, it can be bad for your recovery.” Her voice sent chills down my spine in a surprisingly good way.
“She’s right, please don’t stress yourself too much, eventually it will all come back, but right now we need to get you a proper examination to see and underlying damages.” Again the man spoke, this time with care and passion.
“How about no one is going to do something to me as long as I don’t know where am I or what are you doing to me?” I stood my ground, my mind tells me to not be stupid and let them have a check on me, but my instinct tells me otherwise.
“Alright, alright I understand. Doctor Alex please have someone bring Vaiya something to wear. Everyone give us a room, I think I need to speak to my wife alone.”
