Chapter 1: Effort

I try forcefully to stay awake, but with each passing minute, I find it harder to hold my eyes open. I don’t fully understand why I am trying so hard to keep my eyes open despite there being no light. It is pure, absolute darkness. I have trouble seeing even 3 feet in front me, but with an eerie and cold feeling crawling up my spine I decide I have to keep going.

I take a step further still not sure where I am going or how long I have walked. Each step becoming heavier than last as if the ground itself is holding me back. Despite this I continued to dredge myself onwards for what seemed like an eternity, my exhaustion only deepening with every step, seeping into my very soul. Still forcing myself to keep my tired eyes open, I stop. My eyelids feel like they are tied to hundred-pound weights and each step forward only closing them further.

I decide that I can’t keep this going. I can’t. I resign myself to my fate and close my eyes.

I open my eyes only to find the darkness once again. I cannot tell how much time has passed, however from my lack of hunger I can only presume that I can’t have been here for very long. I try to to get up, but my exhausted body defies me as though it is the very ground itself. With my chest against the ground, I notice that the ground is smooth and flat, which probably means that I am inside. I attempt to get my hands underneath me, but stop as I notice something odd. As my heart drops, I notice that there is no odor. The ground has no odor not even my own, despite the beads of sweat running down my face the ground has no odor at all. I can’t even feel any moisture on the ground. As I push my hands underneath myself, I realize that I can’t get any handholds. It was as if my hands have become ethereal seeping beneath the ground. The rest of my body sinks into the ground slowly enveloping me like mud. Confused, desperate, and exhausted I try desperately to escape from this nightmare. I close my eyes.
