Racing hearts
As I reached behind me to pull out two more daggers, another decaying beast lunged for my ankle. I quickly thrust my foot into its skull, but not fast enough. I was knocked down and my head was forced into the bloody pavement. My weapons were tossed carelessly aside by my attacker, and I struggled to sit up to hold him back. As his bared teeth inched closer I couldn’t help but wonder if this is how I die.
A stupid thought forced its way through my mind. I decided to risk it, as I have nothing else to lose but my life.
I lunged forward and despite his protests, I pinned the thing to the ground. I bared my own teeth, and bit the zombie.
After a few moments, his face became expressionless, and he fell limp against the pavement. I immediately threw myself off the body that I thought I killed. I started to walk away from the scene, but something compelled me to turn around. And as I did, I noticed that his skin was literally reforming. His entire body lay still on his back, but his skin started to mesh together and regain its color. The creature that I was fighting moments before had just transformed back into a human, by my doing.
When I finally regained my thoughts, I realized that the zombie was standing a few feet in front of me, but I could have sworn he was on the ground a few seconds ago.
After a good look at him, I realized he was not even a man, he was just a kid. Like me.

I was snapped awake by a sudden burst of laughter. I looked around and saw the same rough looking kid wearing the same tattered clothes that I had just bit moments before. Only this time he was much closer, and was bent over in a laughing fit.
“What’s so funny?” I manage to say.
He seemed to find this even more hilarious as he struggled to find his voice for a few moments. “Oh, she speaks?” he started to laugh again.
I’ve had enough of this kid. “Hey kid, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I just saved your life, and I would totally appreciate-”
“What princess, a thank you? Well,I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m kinda broken as of this moment. And would TOTALLY appreciate some medical attention.” he mocked.
“Fine, if that’s what you want, then fine. Come on” I motioned for him to follow me, but he just stood there and blinked at me.
“You coming or not?” I asked
“Oh right. After being in that...form for awhile, I forgot some English or ’hand signals” he air quoted. “Us zombies don’t communicate well, ya know?” he smirked.
“I- are you serious?”
“Hundred percent.”
“Alright then, hurry up.” I started to pick up a run towards the forest.
