The house looked strange. That was the first thought that went through Miles' mind as the car pulled up in the driveway. His parents had thought that it's would be better for the family to move to a different area, but Miles thought the exact opposite. He had never wanted to move and his life was already horrible as it was. His girlfriend had left him and he had been forced to share his room with his younger brother. The other kids at his school had become even more obnoxious than ever, and just when he thought his life couldn't get worse his parents decide to move him to this place, in the middle of nowhere. It will make you feel better they said. It'll be fun they said. Well, he had only been there for ten seconds, but Miles already hated it. I'll just have to grin and bear it thought Miles. And so, he stepped out of the car, walked through the front door and simply murmerd, "home sweet home."
"Oh Miles, look at this room. Isn't it just so spacious and nice?" Miles' mum was trying to get Miles to like almost all of the rooms in the house, but out of all of them he thought this one was pretty good.
"I'll take this one."
"Oh really? That's wonderful!"
Miles' mum was being way too enthusiastic about this. But still, Miles couldn't see how nobody else could sense this feeling, the feeling that they weren't the only ones in the house. This feeling slowly got bigger, like a balloon inflating inside of his chest, the only difference being that it wouldn't pop. Suddenly, Miles could hear a faint, ragged breathing that sounded like nothing he had ever heard before. It was as if someone was trapped inside of a room with almost no air at all. The sound made Miles nervous. Where was it coming from? Who could it have been? Then, suddenly, a thud came from inside the floorboards. It's was load, so load that it made Miles jump.
"What was that?" Miles was shuddering
"Oh it must have been the mice." His mum seemed very calm about the situation.
"Mice?! Don't mice carry diseases? You shouldn't be acting so calm!"
"It's fine Miles. We were warned there would be a few mice here, so there's no need to panic."
"Oh... Ok then." Miles was still quite shook up about the whole thing, so decided to go downstairs and see what his dad was up to.
