Prologue

My father punched my older brother, Rae, so hard he stumbled back. Our mom was coming right for me and Rae knew she was, but he was busy with our dad. She grabbed me by my hair and pulled me up. Rage filled her eyes. I didn't make a sound. I knew what would happen if I did. She began to pull her arm back to harm me, but Rae got there in time. He grabbed me out of our mothers' arms and pulled me so close to him I could hear the fast beating of his heart.

"Now you both stay away from her!" Rae yelled.

"Boy, you better give us the girl or you will regret it. You know you will regret it." Our father said.

"You know I will not regret a thing. You both have done beaten Kayla to death and now you want to do the same to Penny. I don't understand how you both could do that to your own blood." Rae growled.

"You are not our blood so we don't care. Now give us the damned child!" Our mother yelled.

I looked up at Rae and could not believe that Rae was not really my brother. What does that mean? Does that mean that he was adopted?

"You both can stay away!" He growled.

My father reeled his arm back and punched Rae in his mouth, hard. I felt the blood drip down from his lip onto my head. He went and hit him again, but I didn't realize that he was protecting me. It felt like he wasn't but he really was. There was one more heavy blow before Rae slung me over his shoulder and kicked my father in the chest, making him fall on the ground.

"I am leaving and taking your daughter, who is my sister! Don't even come and find her, because she will be better off with me then you both." Rae said.

He opened the door and it hit the wall. He took me out and neither of them went after me, or either of us. He and I both knew that they were going to do something about this day sooner or later.
