《PROLOGUE 》

Tell the sun, it can't burn me like you did.

The cold winter breeze hit her face as she walked down the streets, tightly clutching her handbag.
Taking small strides forward, she was careful to make minimal voice and avoid all the dark alleys. It was half past eleven and the streets were empty, like usual.
Walking alone at this hour on the streets of New York was like the most daring thing a person could do in their life, and Rayna was everything but daring. Had it not been for her work, she would have never taken the risk of stepping out of her house this late or even shift to such a dangerous place.
With even the slightest noise, her heart stopped beating but she still continued walking, mentally scolding herself for not leaving early from work. But then her work was the only place she actually enjoyed herself.
Suddenly all her thoughts ceased when she heard a loud thud, as if something fell with great force. It came from the nearby alley. Rayna couldn't see anything due to darkness but one thing was clear, someone was in grave danger.
Before she could even make her legs run away from there, an ear piercing scream made her stop dead in her tracks, followed by a gun shot and another scream. Gathering all the courage she had, she turned towards the source of the origin of the sounds, the dark alley and there laid two people, dead.
"Okay if this is not a signal to run away, then what it is?!" Rayna thought to herself.
Following her mind she started to move. This was until she felt some cold metal against her head.
Not even moving an inch from her place, Rayna turned her head to see what was happening, and there stood a man with a gun in his hand pointed towards Rayna.
His shirt was covered with blood and his face was completely emotionless.
"What did you see?" He asked Rayna.
"Nothing!" Rayna replied with all the courage she could muster.
"Oh really?! I don't think so." The man replied raising one of his brow, surprised at the amout of confidence in Rayna's voice.
"What's taking you so long, Lucifer?" A voice from behind them said.
"Nothing, there's just this girl who I fear might have witnessed everything." The man whose name Rayna now knew was Lucifer replied.
"Bring her up. Boss will decide what to do with her." The other man replied.
Soon Lucifer took out a wide black ribbon from his pant pocket and wrapped it around Rayna's eyes, blindfolding her. He then started dragging her along with himself.
Before she could comprehend what was happening, she was thrown against something soft, which felt like a car's seat. The sound of the engine roaring to life only confirmed her suspicions.
Unfortunately, her hands had been tied at the back so that she couldn't run away.
The car ride was silent, and the only sound that could be heard was of Rayna's uneven breathing.
After what felt like an eternity, the car finally came to a stop. She could hear the sound of the car door opening and slammed close.
Soon, she was being dragged out of the car and taken to god knows where. Suddenly the person dragging her came to a halt.
"Don't try anything smart, otherwise you won't be able to make it out alive." The person, who's voice Rayna recognized was of Lucifer, whispered in her ears before opening a door.
As soon as the door opened, she was pushed inside.
"Chi abbiamo qui?" A husky voice said, in some language she couldn't understand.
(Whom do we have here?)
"I caught her near the dark alley where those traitors were killed, trying to run away." Lucifer said. "She probably witnessed everything."
"I didn't see anything, I swear." Rayna pleaded.
"You only speak when you are asked to, tesoro." The same unknown person said in a calm yet threatening tone.
"Puoi andare ora, Lucifer."
(You can leave now.)
The next thing Rayna heard was the opening and closing of the doors which made her realize that she was now alone with the stranger.
"Take that ribbon off." The stranger ordered her. She quickly obliged, realising the fact that Lucifer had untied her hands before bringing her here.
Removing the ribbon, Rayna came face to face with the most handsome man on earth.
Standing 6 feet or probably taller, there he stood, wearing an Armani suit. His eyes were the most beautiful shade of grey. Completely different. His hair was messed up yet looked so sexy. And then his lips.. so alluring.
"Like what you see?" The man asked with a stupid smirk plastered on his face, which made her realize that she had been staring at him like an idiot.
"What's your name?" The person asked.
"Rayna." She said softly.
"Rayna." The way her name rolled down his tongue was music to her ears.
"I am Xavier. Xavier Rodriguez. The men you saw killing those people work for me." He finally spoke after a long pause.
Xavier.
"I didn't see anything." Rayna protested, remembering why she was brought here.
"We will come to that later." Xavier said in a heavy accent, which made her realize that he hardly spoke english.
"Do you guys, um, work in the mafia?" Rayna asked, with a horrified expression on her face.
He chuckled.
"I do not work fo the mafia tesoro. I am the mafia." He said, taking small strides forward.
Rayna started stepping back to maintain the proximity between them. This was until she hit the wall.
"What do you even think you are doing, tesoro."
"I-I could ask you the same question." She stuttered, earning a smirk from Xavier.
They were just inches apart, with their lips almost touching. He placed his lips in the crook of her neck, nuzzling her hair and leaving small butterfly kisses down her neck.
Suddenly she pushed him away with all the force she had. "Don't." She almost pleaded.
"Lucifer." He called out, and Lucifer came running within seconds. "Drop her home." He nodded and left the room.
"Where do you think you can go running away from me? I'll always come for you." Xavier said in a threatening voice.
"Sei mio. Solo mio, tesoro."
(You're mine. Only mine, darlin')
Although Rayna didn't understand his last words but she knew it was not something good.
