Chapter Zero
Maslen was a cold business man with no family left for him. He was still very bitter over the death of Myril. Everything was a constant reminder that Myril was gone, from Maslen's eyes to the birhmark on his left hand. Myril was his twin, his older twin, and he died in a tragedy many years before. Maslen's own name was a reminder of the incident before, as he was told it meant 'Little Twin.`
Everything in his life was bitter after that, including his own coffee every morning before a busy day at his successful company. While he was extremely wealthy from his large inheritance and company, he still felt like he had nothing good in this world. Maslen had no family to come home to, no daughters or wives. He only had his empty mansion and servants to keep him company all day and night. Maslen was starting to not be able to bare to be alone.
He was very busy and occupied one August morning, as he had to go to a very important meeting about his company. Worst thing was that he was already running behind schedule. The power went out in the middle of the night which meant his alarm did not go off at all. He was frustrated and trying to find all his paperwork for the meetings. He was struggling to find his clothing that would be the best to wear at an event like this. Everything about that day was chaotic.
When he finally gotten everything together, he started to walk out his front door. Maslen gasped and suddenly stopped in his tracks when he noticed something was left for him at his doorstep. There was a small, wicker basket with a pink ribbon tied around it. The basket had a note layed on top of it addresed to 'The Residents of This Home.' Maslen peeked inside the basket and gasped loudly, so loudly as to alarm his servants. He wasn't left a something, he was left a someone.
"Mr.Van Damme, what is the matter? What were you left?" A red haired French servant asked.
"It's not a what, its a who. I was left a baby!" Maslen said with a face of shock nearly indescribable.
"Oh dear! We must take it inside immediately. The heat is no good for a small child," an older woman servant said.
Malsen Van Damme brought the child inside and sat it on the table, thinking of what to do. He noticed a small lion toy inside of the baby's hand. The baby had a small amount of brown hair and had one blue and one brown eye. It was wearing a tiny nightgown with moons all over it. The child was looking up at Malsen very calmly and peacefully, only making the occasional cooing noise.
"Should we call child services to take the child, sir?" The red haired servant said.
"No, no. The child shall stay here. Hire someone to make a nursery and play room for it in the mansion." Malsen said ignoring all the servants' shock from the response.
"But sir, you have a meeting soon. What are you going to do with a baby?"
"I don't care about that. Call them and tell them why I'll be running so late." He said and admired the baby once more.
He picked up the note addressed to him that was on top of the basket. The handwriting was messy, but manageable. It was in French, but luckily Malsen has learned how to read French before in school depsite being Dutch. Whoever wrote this note was stupid for leaving it in French in a primarily Belgian-Dutch community. He unfolded the letter and began to read.
The Residents of This Home,
The child I have left on your doorstep is named Mirrorela. Her middle name is Louise. She is a nine month old female from another world. I have left her here as I know no one would look for her here and I cannot keep her myself. Her birthday is the 5th of December. She loves her lion toy and will cry without it, but she is usually very content. Mirrorela needs someplace warm and loving to stay in. Please take care of her and welcome her into your home. She is a very special girl.

"What did the note say, sir?" The older lady servant said to Malsen.
"Her name is Mirrorela and she's nine months old. I want to adopt her almost immediately."
"I can take care of her until you are back from work, sir."
"Thank you. Tell the others I will be going to the meeting now and that I want someplace for her to sleep for tonight by the time I get home. You keep her safe."
Malsen kissed his new daughter on the forehead before once again heading out of the door. When he got to the meeting he once again apologised for being late. Even while at the meeting, he was still at home with Mirrorela.
He was planning on what he could do with her in the future. He would make sure she got the best education. He would teach her Dutch, French, and English. He would send her to the best schools in the country and would give her access to all the things she would ever need to be successful. She would inherit his money and his business, but she could do what she wanted with it. He would give her a loving family like the one he felt he so desperately neeeed.
The meeting was over by the time he finally decided to start paying attention. He couldn't properly focus on his company during it, but luckily the transcripts for the meetings were always emailed online for reference. He rushed out of the meeting in order to get home to Mirrorela.
I should probably buy stuff she is going to need, Malsen thought to himself. He went into the store and bought baby food and more clothes for the child to wear. He also bought diapers and a carseat for her. On the way to the checkout line he noticed baby monitors, and bought those too. He didn't have a stroller yet for her, but decided he didn't need it quite yet and he could buy one another time.
"How is the nursery coming along?" Malsen asked his butler.
"Quite good sir. We put the nursery in the old library, right next to your bedroom. They have a fancy crib set up and they are painting lions on the walls since the little tyke seems to love them so much. We have installed a changing station on one of the walls. Mirrorela will have the best nursery in the country," The butler said.
"Good. How did Nancy do with the baby?"
"Oh very good sir. She knew how to calm Mirrorela down. She seems to like Nancy," The butler said.
"Tell Nancy that she is done serving me. She is to be the one to take care of Mirrorela when I cannot be around as her job only. I will pay twice as much for her to do it and she can move herself into here. I can have her take a room in the West Wing."
"Will do, Sir."
Malsen walked over to where Mirrorela was resting in the basket. He stood over her smiling, the first time his servants ever seen him smile for any reason. He picked her up and began rocking her in his arms. He had a family again. A real family.
