Prologue

Drifting off into sleep, Ava Martin dreamed of many things. She dreamed of people scurrying around rainy streets, and a man. He had dark auburn hair with matching brown eyes. Ava was in the street looking at the man. It felt like an eternity when his head whipped around to meet her eyes.

She woke up. Looking around she saw she was sitting in an alleyway. A large dumpster and a few neighboring bags was sitting next to her. Slowly, Ava began to stand up. Almost instantly she felt the pain in her legs from yesterday. Running all day was a terrible idea. The day prior, she had been running for exercise. When you’re in her situation, you don’t find much time to do things. Now standing, Ava wobbled her way over to the street. Only then does she realize that it’s raining. People rushed to the safety of indoors, but even in the midst of the chaos, she saw him. She saw him. The man from her dream. The same auburn hair and chocolate brown eyes.

Without realizing, she lost herself in space, thinking, just thinking. Questions ran through her mind. Who is he? What is he doing here? Why was he in my dream? When did he get here? Where did he come from?

While in her own world of questions the mystery man had walked over to Ava. Almost as if a switch had been turned on her head. She gasped, seeing that he was standing in front of her.

“Is it my stunning looks? Or my irresistible charm? Is that why you were staring at me?” The man questioned.

“I saw you in my dream.” Ava said calmly, looking away from him.

“I've been known to appear when people need me.”

Now looking in his eyes, “No. I saw you, just now, in my dream.”

The color from his face drained. He looked as if he'd seen a ghost. “Here? As in this rainy hell-hole?” He said, trying his hardest not to stutter.

All Ava did was nod.

The man pulled he back into the alleyway. Holding her shoulders he, as calmly as possible, explained, “Don't worry. I'm not going to hurt you, but I need you to listen.” He looked from side to side and then back to Ava, “My name is Leo Lane. I can do something most people can't, and I think you can too.”
