Chapter 1

Kylie

“Ow,” I said as my seamstress tightened the corset around my waist.

“You need to look perfect for your wedding. We can’t have you looking like a pig in your wedding dress now can we?” She replied with a thick Spanish accent. My father decided that I was ready to inherit the throne to the Northern Kingdom. After the fourth Civil War, the president decided it would be best to split the country into four sections and have them ruled by a monarchy. I’m part of the royal family for the Northern Kingdom. There is also the Southern, Eastern, and Western Kingdoms. My father is getting old. He thinks it would be for the best if I step up and take my place as queen. The only requirement is I have to be married. One problem, I’m 16. But of course that never really crossed my father’s mind. So, here I am, getting measured for my wedding dress and deciding what flavor the cake will be.

“Ms. Gonzales, do you know anything about Prince Harold?,” I ask with the little bit of air that is left in my lungs. “Anything I should know about before I marry him and devote the rest of my life to him?” Another tiny detail my father overlooked is that I have never once met or even seen this guy and yet somehow my father thinks he is fit for the throne because he has the word “prince” in his name.

“I’m sorry your highness, I know nothing about him except that he is a prince and he is from the Southern Kingdom. Though, you will get to see him for the first time at your rehearsal dinner tonight.”

“Ms. Gonzales, have I ever told you how helpful you are? Your also very specific,” I say to her sarcastically. I’m trying to get in as much sarcasm as I can before I have to be all official and serious when I take over the kingdom. If I’m being honest, I’m more nervous then I am upset about marrying this guy I don’t know. I’ve always had this vision of love were we are like soulmates. Everything is always a joke and we are happy all the time. One another. Really, that’s all we need to live a wonderful life in this world. For the rest of my time in the dressing room I looked out the window as I pondered the thought of real love. As I look out into the world below I see the rolling green hills tat are dotted with flowers. They rustle in the wind creating a ripple of reds and pinks. They look even prettier in the reflection that is cast upon the lake that is inside the circle of pine trees which is what we are famous for. Paved on top of the hills is a dusty brown road made of runoff and sediment. On the closest road to the palace I see a white carriage with the symbol of the Southern Kingdom on the side. Two snakes wrapped around a shield. I notice that it is coming closer to the castle. There can only be one person inside that carriage who is visiting the castle. Prince Harold has arrived.
