The Election
I open my eyes and am startled by the darkness. Then I remember where I am, better yet, I remember when. It’s the Aphotic. There is no light here. I was only a baby when it happened. The 2060 presidential election was hacked. So that a candidate who isn’t even of legal age or citizenship had every vote, so that he undoubtedly won. It took the FBI and National Security teams years to figure out how he did it. But since there was no evidence to prove it was hacked he became leader with his fake ID and passport stating that he was a 36 year old American citizen named John Lyn. He’s actually a 22 year old Russian spy named Kai Lex. But it’s too late now. He “legally” won back in 2060 so he brought over his entire organization. He made sure they legally became citizens too. Now the government is too corrupt to fix. Once we figured out what had happened and lined up an attack we had no chance. Not only did he take over the United States, he controls the whole world. After our first attack attempt Kai sent out the buzzers. The only amounts of light we get are an extremely dim shine in the mornings and the flash of the buzzers. If you get caught out before 8:00 AM or after 6:00 PM get tazed. That’s why we call them buzzers. It hurts pretty bad too. I’ve only been caught twice.
“Get up Allison,” says a rough voice I recognize as Wren.
“Okay, I’m coming,” I reply.
Wren is one of my closest friends. I care about him a lot. Neither of us have our parents anymore and only really have each other. We ran into each other after the Crash. Kai collected everyone with government jobs, both our moms and dads, and killed them all. He burned them. Now they’re just ashes scattered in the dust and dirt we walk through. Wren was trying to get some food and so was I. We managed to get some together and have stuck with each other since. Eventually we realized we couldn’t do it on our own. So we became part of a rebellious group called the Sunbeams, Beamers for short. We’re working to do whatever we can to fix the world. I slowly get up and go to the kitchen of mine and Wren's joining apartments. The Beamers managed to take control of a nice hotel and apartment complex. Wren was already finishing up cooking when I walked in.
"I made eggs and bacon," says Wren.
"Thanks," I say with a smile.
We sit and eat in silence. Today is another dark day. But we can do something about it. Wren and I decided a long time ago that we weren't going to just sit back, we were going to go on missions and stakeouts and bounty hunts. We were going to make a difference and help take steps closer to getting us back to the light. Today we are going on a very important mission.
