Chapter 1
I was starting to second guess my brilliant plan, if it was brilliant at all. However, I had come this far now to stop, even if I wanted to leave without arising suspicious it would be impossible to now. The plan had been simple, sneak into the ball as a server; which had been easy enough, and change into my dress. The dress was going to make eyes turn and jaws drop; made from silk it encased my body, leaving nothing to the imagination. The plunging neckline stopped above the navel only adding to the look of sex I was exuding. It was meant to turn people’s heads and notice me, hopefully enough people would look and that would gain the interest from the man himself. The one man I wanted to kill above all others the man that help ruin the earth.
I adjusted the vibrant emerald green dress, allowing a tiny more cleavage to show before making my way into the ballroom. My red hair was a striking contrast to the dress and with my pale skin the people of the compound would call me a goddess, and I hated it; but I couldn’t deny that I did look different from others in the compound. Shaking my head free from those thoughts I started back onto the mission on hand; I needed to stay focused and not allow my mind to wander. I pushed forward and within seconds of my entrance all eyes had turned and were staring right at me. Though it really felt as they were staring right into me. This was the attention I wanted, it was part of the plan, but when it came down to it… I really did hate the feeling of all their eyes. They all knew that I wasn’t one of them, and soon there would be questions. I really needed to get this done soon or my plan would be compromised.
Keeping my head down as I made her way through the crowd I tired to move between the crowds without drawing any unwanted attention. Yes, I wanted attention, but only from the right person, him. However, luck didn’t seem to be on my side as I was drawing unwanted attention as each guard I passed seemed noticed me. My heart skipped a beat as I saw them place their hands over their weapon. This wasn’t looking good, but leaving now would only draw more attention, I was stuck.
Thinking back on the plan I knew that only one other person knew what I was doing tonight, to ensure that my plan would be safe from the evolved, or so they call themselves. Ugh… I hated that name, it was so stuck up. My friend May, she was the only other person who knew about the plan. May was always smiling, even in her circumstance, she lost a leg during an early attack on the compound; before we got our protection. She didn’t mind though, and neither did my brother apparently. I didn’t mind, I was happy that they both found one another. I was so lost in the memories of my friend and brother that when a man stepped before me I didn’t noticed until it was to late.
“May I have this dance?” The voice caused me to stop abruptly, almost tripping and landing right on the man. “Oh, I’m sorry, didn’t mean to startle you.”
A middle aged man, an evolved, stood before me extending his hand out, as I was supposed to take it. However, instead of taking his hand I just stared at him, dumbfounded, why on earth was this man asking me to dance, and what was I going to do. For seconds I looked at him, he had thin lips that were pressed into a line of frustration, and his brown eyes held Annika in a trance. His high cheekbones and sharp chin line were covered in a small growth of hair, it matched the salt and pepper hair that was swept back into a low ponytail. I pushed those thoughts out of her head, clenching her fists at my side, not taking his hand. The man noticed my lack of movement and clenched his face, he knew I was up to something.
“I’m sorry, but I’ll have to deny the request. I am waiting for someone.” I replied, clasping my hands in front, trying to stop the temptation of killing the man.
“Oh, and who would that be, if I may ask? I would like to know who I am up against.” The man smiled, a very cocky smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“Well, I’m not quiet sure who that is just yet, we haven’t met. That’s why I’m here after all.” I smiled, pushed my loose red curls behind my ear.
“Is that so? An non-evolved here, at the mating ball? I’ve never heard of such a thing; you truly must be a special creature.” The man took a step closer, almost to close for comfort.
“Yes… I must be. Now, if you will excuse me.” I bowed her head and started to turn when the mans hand gripped my forearm, pulling me into his chest.
My heart started to race, this was not part of the plan. I chose this ball because I knew that no one would approach me, since I could never be someone’s mate. Why was this man so persistent on keeping me here? People were starting to stare as I attempted to pull free from the man’s grasp. From afar, the guards started to take notice of the commotion in the middle of the ballroom and made their way over, hands over their weapons. Noticing that I was now drawing the unwanted attention, fear coursed through me and I needed to think of a plan, and fast. The only thing I could think of doing would be to scream, to pretend to be the damsel in distress. So, that’s what I did. Letting out a deathly scream and started to fight, weakly, against the man. However, the man was not buying the act one bit, and I knew it. All I could hope for now was that my acting was good enough to fool the guards.
“Don’t try that act with me darling, I know what you’re doing here.” He seethed and tightened his grip; shit, that was going to bruise.
“Please!” I screamed, using the fakest voice I could muster up. “I am here for the ball, nothing more, please, I’ve done nothing wrong! You’re hurting me.” Fake tears started to build in my eyes, hopefully this would make it more convincing.
“What’s going on here?” A guard came up to them, his black jacket zipped up to his clavicle and his hand on the gun shaped weapon.
“This non-evolved does not belong here, rules of the ball do not allow this. She needs to be removed, I was only assisting on the princes’ behalf.” The man explained, turning to talk to the guard.
“Please, I was invited to the ball, how else would I have gotten in? I didn’t know that I was going to get in trouble, please… don’t hurt me.” I whispered, trying to show how weak and scared I was… even though deep inside there was a fire raging.
“Paulus, you are not doing anything on my behalf,” A voice boomed from behind them, causing the guard to bow and the whole room to go silent.
The man turned, forcing me to turn with him. I continued to struggle in his grasp, hoping that I could break free, even though I knew it would be pointless. Suddenly, I felt a hot gaze on my skin causing me to stop struggling and face the man that I’ve hated almost all my life. The man before me wore a tight black suit with a crisp white dress shirt underneath and a black tie. His muscles strained against the fabric of the suit and for some odd reason I really wanted to run my hands over them. Shaking those thoughts out I studied the rest of him, he was tall, like I had to crank my neck up just to see all of him. His cheekbones were high and his jaw was chiselled, just like the other man, but for some odd reason I felt more of an attraction to him. His black hair was swept over to one side and gelled up, with one side shaved. However, the thing that made me hold my breath were his eyes, just like in the stories. A bright sky blue that felt as though it penetrated my soul. He looked like a god, hell he practically was a god.
“Your Highness, I am just trying to help.” Paulus, I guess that’s his name, stated, still holing a tight grip on my arm.
“Let the female go, now!” He shouted, his voice reverberating off the walls in the ballroom, actually shaking the windows.
“Sir, if you would let me explain -.” Paulus was cut off when the mans hand gripped his throat.
Suddenly and forcefully I fell to the ground, my body crumbling into a ball as Paulus was lifted off the ground, his limbs flailing in the air as he was robbed off his breath. This was my chance to escape, but if I left now I would never get another chance to kill this man. However, I knew that no matter how much I long to kill him I would not be able to do it if I died there tonight, so with that in mind I started to inch away from this scene. As I stood up and I noticed that no one was looking at me, or so I thought. I turned to make my escape and came face to face with a guard, the same guard from before. Now I knew there was no where to go, I was going to have to stay here until this is sorted out and hopefully make it out alive. Slowly I turned around and faced the scene. Paulus was now on the floor, clenching his chest as he drew long, deep breaths in. The man turned toward me and I froze, his blue eyes searing me until I couldn’t help but turn my head down. I heard heavy footsteps walk towards me and a hand reached under my chin and forced my head back up so that I came face to face with the man I came to kill.
“What do we have here?” His voice was rough, but at the same time warmed my heart like a fire.
“Please Sir, I didn’t mean to cause trouble, I was invited here and-.” He gripped my jaw tighter and I winced in pain, causing me to stop mid sentence.
“Don’t try to lie to me, I don’t like it when I’m lied too.” He whispered in my ear, brushing his nose against the curve of my neck, lingering there for longer than necessary.
“Sir, please I’m not lying. I have no reason to lie.” I whispered, trying to calm my frantically beating my heart before it burst out of my chest.
He looked down at me, his face held no expression but I could see something stirring in his eyes, something that I haven’t seen in a long time. There was lust in his eyes and that scared me, because the last time I saw that in a man’s eyes I almost died. Fear coursed through me as my mind tired to wander off to horrible memories. I reeled myself back and saw that we were now moving, confused I look down and noticed that I was no longer on the ground. Pure fear coursed through me as I looked up to see that the man was now carrying me. Without my control a scream ripped through my throat and I tired to get out of his hold, however his grip only tightens. After minutes of my struggles going nowhere I gave up and decided to look myself over, hoping that my weapon was still hidden. He held me under my knees and shoulders, holding me close to his chest. With this vantage point I couldn’t tell if the knife was still attached to my thigh, but when I rubbed my legs together I could tell that it was still there.
“I can smell your fear.” He whispered.
“Please, let me go, I just want to go home.” I whispered, tying once more to get out of his grip.
“No, I don’t think I will. I’m enjoying myself to much.” He whispered in my ear, his breath hot against my skin causing goose bumps to erupt all over my body.
“I’m not, please.” I begged one last time, I just needed to be able to get to my knife so that I could end all of this.
Suddenly we stopped moving and I turned to notice that we were now in a different room. For a spilt second I had no idea where I was, but once I took a look around I noticed that we were in his room. I expected the room to be dark from the stories that were told to me, instead colours of teal and grey filled the room. The first part of the room held a fireplace with 2 love seats and a lazy boy, huh, even they can’t escape the lazy boy. A beautiful rug of an modern design was placed in the space before the hearth, where the fire pokers remained. I will keep that in the back of my head for later. As he walked further into the room I noticed that this was not just one room, but a whole apartment. Walking past a kitchen I noticed that it held every single thing I could dream of, right down to the synthesizer, which I’ve heard can recycle waste into a new item. Once we walked past the kitchen I looked up to see that we were about to go to another floor, how big was this place? I had thought that he would be tired to carrying me by now but he hadn’t even broken a sweat. I was about to ask him when my eyes went wide with fear, he was walking towards the bed. Even though the bed was beautiful, with midnight black sheets and a grey duvet. There was another fireplace in the bedroom, however this time there was no chairs surrounding it, instead there was a large fur blanket with pillows. He stopped before the bed and placed me down on the bed.
“Why am I here?” I asked, as I very slowly moved my hand toward the knife.
“Because I want you here.” His answer was clear and cut, leaving no room for discussion.
“I should get back though; my family is going to start to worry about me if they don’t hear from me.” I stated, hoping to buy some time as I reached for my knife.
“Let me know who they are and I will let them know.” He told me, turning away from me and walking toward the fireplace.
This is it, I needed to act now before I loose my nerve. I took my knife from its hiding spot and slipped off the bed, ditching my heels so that I could sneak up on him. While he was bent over starting the fire I inched my way over to him, praying that he didn’t turn around. As I stood behind him I raised my blade he turned and grabbed hold of my wrist, painfully gripping it until the blade fell form my hand. A scream escaped my mouth as his other hand reached behind and grabbed a fist full of my hair, pulling me flush against his body. Before his face held no emotion, but now, now his face held anger. I attempted to get away from him but my attempts only seemed to anger him further, a growl escaped his mouth and he brought my face close to his. Feeling his hot breath caused shivers to run down my spine, to the point where tears filled my eyes, and this time they were real.
“I wish you hadn’t done that, I had hoped that you would have given up on your plan love, but you are very stubborn. Aren’t you?” He asked, his lips brushing against my ear before biting down on my lobe.
“Please…” I whispered, because I had no idea what else to say.
“Please what? Spare your life like you were going to do to me?” He asked, tightening his grip until his nails broke my skin. “Why are you making me do this?”
“I don’t know what you are talking about? I’m not doing anything to you.” I told him, attempting to use my free hand to push myself away from him.
“You just attempted to kill me, I should be pulling your limbs from your body!” He shouted, forcing me towards the bed. “But instead here you are, why did my mate have to be a human.”
“No… no!” I shouted and tired to push against him, but found no use as his muscles grew with each step.
“Oh yes mate, you’re mine! And I did not appreciate you trying to kill me.” He gritted out and pushed me back onto the bed.
“No! Don’t touch me!” I screamed as he pushed me down on the bed.
“Why not, you’re mine to do with as I please, that’s your function.” He whispered in my ear and gently placed his lips against neck.
“Please don’t, just kill me, don’t rape me.” I begged, and how I hated begging but I couldn’t go through that type of pain again.
The man above me pulled back and looked at my tear stained faced, my hands were now free and I was able to curl up into a ball, trying to shield myself from the man above me. I closed my eyes, hoping that my pain would be swift and painless, but instead I felt nothing. Slowly I opened my eyes to see the man still standing over me, worry etched over his face as reached out to me. I pushed myself further back into the bed, trying to get away from him, but he grabbed me before I made it very far. I was gathered up in his arms and found myself on his lap as he started to rock me, confused I turned my head to try and see what he was doing but his hands stopped me and pulled me into his chest. That’s when I broke down, I started sobbing uncontrollably and I couldn’t seem to stop it.
“It’s okay love, I’m not going to hurt you, no one will ever hurt you again.” He whispered in my ear, before placing a kiss on my forehead.
“Why are you being so nice to me?” I asked, not caring anymore that I was on his lap and in his arms.
“You are my mate.” He whispered, moving so that was now lying down on the bed with him beside me.
“I just tired to kill you and now you are treating me so… so…” I trailed off as words escaped me.
“Shh love, get some rest, we are talk about this in the morning.” He whispered in my ear as my eye lids started to feel heavy. What was he doing to me? Why was I getting tired?
“No… no, you’re doing something to me. Stop it!” I attempted to shout, but it only came out as a mumble as sleep started to fall over me.
“No one is going to touch you again, I promise you.” He whispered in my ear before placing a soft kiss against my forehead as the succumb to the sleep.
