Summary

Clara and Marie's interracial friendship in 1816 Louisiana is put to the test with the help of a flower, a voodoo world, and too many unspoken issues. Clara is a rich planter’s daughter. Marie is a poor freeborn girl. Regardless of living in 1816 Louisiana, they are best friends. By a twist of fate, however, Clara is dropped unknowingly into the voodoo plane that also seems to be Marie’s playground. Left with nothing and no one, Clara must find a way back to her real home in the mortal world before she is killed. Meanwhile, Marie hunts for answers in the actively changing plane while also oblivious to her friends fate. Luckily, Clara acquires uncertain help from an uncertain local who’s not all that he seems. And although, he helps get her home, she quickly finds that the return is not permanent. Conversely, while searching for answers Marie receives shocking news from the spirit King of New Orleans. News that will change her life and the lives of everyone around her, forever. Little does Clara know that Marie and the mystery she’s trying to solve has more to do with her and her connection to the world than she could ever realize. Follow along with Clara and Marie’s separate tales, as they navigate their equally changing worlds; their equally changing friendship; and their equally changing future with inequality

Prologue

Feistbane (fīst-bān) - A gray, leathery charm used to absorb smells. Such a charm was gleaned from a hunting dog post-mortem and dried. Whether the dried skin was placed on a person or thing, the once sensitive flesh could be used to absorb anything from the strongest to the weakest of scents within its designated vicinity.

Fleur-de-lis (flûr’dǝ-lē’) - Directly translated from French as “Flower of the Lily,” yet often regarding the Iris, this flower is also the symbol of the city of New Orleans, akin to the Holy Trinity, and inherent to French royal aesthetic. It is a rare plant species solely owned and cultivated by the New Orleans royal family, therefore the fleur-de-lis was commonly addressed as extinct. Nevertheless, it was just as commonly appraised for its beauty and magical properties as it was for its rarity. Little is known about the flora, even though it was a common character in the city’s best rumors and legends. Certain accounts suggest that the flower’s properties include curing any and all disease; connecting true-lovers; and granting a world of wishes, however, the royal palace has neither confirmed nor denied any of those claims.

Muting Ring (myōōtĭng rĭng) - An enchanted slab of raw, porous mineral inlaid in a cradle of wrought iron that spanned across two or more knuckles. When activated, the mineral would absorb and hold the very sound of any spoken word that came near to it. Such a device not only silenced speakers but also nullified any magical intents made through the captured sound as well.
