Chapter 1
◆ Chapter One ◆
A soft breeze ruffled the grass as the crickets chirped and birds whistled their melancholy songs. The blinds rolled up with a soft patter and the curtains swung to the side with a clink. The girl smiled as she gazed up at the stars with wonder. She would like to think that she knows much about the great unknown above her, but deep down inside she knows she’s only scratched the surface.
A red telescope sits beside her, untouched as she uses what is left of her eyesight to map out the sky above. Though she needs glasses, she prefers to only wear them while at school and while reading. She slowly leans up against the railing of her bed, the metal surface cooling the bare skin of her arms. She closes her eyes for a moment, her smile vanishing as she takes a deep breath. Music began to play from the phone in her hand, a song only those with a particular taste would enjoy. The smile made its way back, smaller this time, as she swayed to the beat. She had vowed long ago to cherish these moments alone with herself, the music, and the stars, all toxic thoughts flowing out of her head for the time being.
In that moment, she was in her natural form, swaying to the beat in her small room as she let all the thoughts that bubbled in that rather unpleasant head of hers flow out for all to see. Never would anyone realize that the edgy girl had such dark thoughts about herself, as she concealed it with excessive amounts of fake smiles and chatty compliments. Sometimes though, it is just too much to bear, so she hides herself in her room to find a sense of comfort. Comfort always came.
Opening her eyes, she looked down at her wrist. A thin, white scar sat there, staring up at the girl. She held a hand over it, hoping that would take it away. It’s quite silly, really, how she came to acquire that little scar. She didn’t do it herself, nor did someone else do it to her. More like, something...
’It was fourth period. She was typing frantically at the keyboard in front of her, having a quite conversation with the boy beside her. “Drake, I have no idea why you would say that. Or even send that to her,” she looked up at him, a smirk clearly written across her face, “she’s going to be so mad.” He laughed, glancing at the screen in front of him. “What are we even s’posed to do in this class?” she rolled her eyes, going back to her typing. “Apparently we need to learn to type, for our ‘futures’. Though most of you guys won’t make it past high school.” he lightly shoved her. “Shut up!” The bell went off, signaling the period ending. Quickly, she grabbed her laptop, and began to head out the door. “Ow!” she hissed as a passerby pushed her into a wall. Jerking her arm away from her belongings to fix her hair, a sharp pain hit her wrist. Peering down, she gasped, before laughing. Her laptop had scrapped the skin off of her arm.’
The blinds fell back down, and the curtains closed once more. The girl turned the soft melody off and clambered up the ladder to her loft. She sighed as her head hit the pillow. “It’s so late,” she whispered to herself. The faint red glow of her TV’s power button spread across the wall to the side of her. She closed her eyes, lifting her arm up in the air. Her short finger nails grazed the ceiling, a soft scratching ringing through the room. Her eyes opened once more at the footsteps coming down the hall. She hastily rolled over and scrunched her eyes shut, before hearing the bathroom door open and shut. She released a breath, opening her eyes once more. She could see the light through the cracks in the wall where the ceiling crossed from one room to the other. The light went out, door open and shut, footsteps up the hall, and the oh-so-familiar slam of her parent’s door. Her eyes fluttered close as she mumbled “Goodnight, whoever’s out there...”
