Summary

It is forbidden to mate with another ranked person. If you were born an Alpha, then you would die an Alpha. Arlo didn't care about following rules. There are seven ranks in a pack. The Alphas were in charge of the pack as a whole. The Betas were second-in-command and were the ones who trained the pack warriors. The Gammas were in charge of the schooling and banking for the pack. The Deltas were the pack warriors. The Epsilons were the doctors, daycare staff, and chefs of the pack. Omegas cleaned and did the chores for the pack. The Zetas were the human servants in the pack. The ranks in the packs aren’t allowed to mate with one another; it is a law that ranks must mate within their own rank. Adela Ronnell is a Zeta in the Gladys pack, which meant since she was born a Zeta, and she was going to die a Zeta. An annual ball was coming up for ranks to meet with others of their rank to choose a suitable mate from. When Adela arrives to the ball she was told to attend, she is surprised to find out she had been switched with the Alpha’s daughter. It surprises her even more when one of the Alphas’ she meets, seems to not want to leave her alone.

Chapter One - Bastard Child

- Adela’s pov -

- May 9th, Thursday, 9:45 am -

I held back the curtain to Lorena’s, the Alpha’s daughter, window and looked outside. Just below us, some of the pups were playing with each other in the bright green grass. I watched the scene with a smile on my face. I wasn’t allowed out a lot and seeing glimpses like this, made my day. After a moment, I pulled the curtains back to their original place before I turned around and my eyes landed on Lorena, who was sitting on her bed, reading a book.

Her resemblance to me was eerily uncanny. We looked like twins, not to mention we were born on the same day. I had figured everything out when I was younger; my mother was having an affair with her fathers - the Alpha - and I was the result of that. Though everyone hoped I would look like my mom, I came out looking just like him. It didn’t help either that his daughter and I looked like we were the same person. That’s why I was kept inside most of the time, to hide the fact that I was his bastard kid.

As if knowing I was looking at her, she turned her head and caught my gaze. She put her book down and shifted her body to face me. “Del, what are you wearing for the ball?”

“I don’t know, Lor. Probably just some jeans and a shirt,” I teased and see her frown on her face. I roll my eyes and grin at her before joining her on her bed and sitting down. “I’m kidding, your dad took care of it. He really wants me out of his hair so he’s going above and beyond to make sure some man wants me.” I snickered to her because it was true.

“It’s not fair. Dad shouldn’t true you like that. I mean, you’re his kid, too. It doesn’t matter how you got here, you’re here and he should own up to it.” She scoffed angrily and I smiled slightly at that, reaching over and placing my hand on her arm and rubbing her gently. We were definitely not what anyone was expecting. Everyone expected her to come out dominant and aggressive because she was a full blood Alpha, but she was like this sweet and delicate flower that bloomed gingerly and gracefully. She was quiet and could keep her anger at bay and was always so generous with everyone.

I was supposed to be the soft spoken and quiet daughter because I was only half werewolf and I came out human. However, I got the fire and possessiveness in me to take over any Alpha. Constant times the Alpha and I are arguing over the smallest of things, but I don’t back down. No, I blame him for not being able to keep it in his pants and I blame my mom for allowing herself to go on without protection. Because of their mistake, I’m unable to live as a normal human in fear that someone will see that Lorena and I look so similar and know that the Alpha had broken a law; no ranking may mate with another rank.

Luckily, I didn’t have a wolf and people say I smelt completely human. There were a few issues about me, but many could be easily looked over. I was stronger than other humans and even some werewolves. I’ve gotten into a fight with a male Omega once and had been able to beat him. Even though he was only Omega, he should have easily been able to take me down. All of my senses are heightened, so I can see, hear, and smell things no normal human can. Lastly, I’m a crazy fast runner.

“It is what it is. You know my motto, ‘you get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit.’” I joked to her, trying to lighten up her mood a little bit. In reality, I was excited to be able to go out and be able to be outside for more than thirty minutes at a time. I could care less about finding my perfect match. All I was worried about was if I would be able to stay outside the whole time.

“Adela,” she said, giving me a disapproving look. “It’s still not fair. Like, dad was enraged at you for dying my hair when I’m the one who wanted it done.” She said and I winced at the memory of a few mornings ago. Lorena had wanted to dye the ends of her hair purple and I helped her with her. That evening Alpha Christian had nearly attacked me over the manner, but Lorena stood up to him. It was one of the few times she had stood up to him and I was glad she would do that for me. “He’s only doing all of this because he wants you to leave, but I don’t want you to. I’m gonna really miss you, Del.”

Suddenly her arms were around me and she hugged me tightly to her. It surprised me, but I hugged her back, patting her back in a comforting manner. “You’re not losing me, Lori, I promise you. I’m not at all interested in finding a suitable mate, so I’m planning on coming back. Don’t think you’ll get rid of me so easily.” I chuckled gently, though her words did make me tear up.

- May 10th, Friday, 6:32 pm -

“Come on out, Del. I want to see you before it’s time for me to go.” Lorena was endlessly knocking on the bathroom door and calling in to me. I started ignoring her when she wouldn’t stop after I gave her the answers she wanted. I was stuck in her as three women helped me into a white and lacey dress - that fit me to the T -, did my hair, and my make up for the ball tonight.

“Here you are, darling,” the last lady in the room, the hairdresser, spun me in the chair I was sitting in to look at the mirror. “You look absolutely splendid, Miss Adela.” The woman said to me in a thick British accent, but I wasn’t paying attention as I watched myself in the mirror. I looked gorgeous. The Alpha really knew who to hire when it came to beauty.

“Just call me Adela. Thank you so much for the help, Jules,” I say to her, standing up from my chair and looking back to her. She was a timid woman who looked a little older than my mother. She gave me a small smile and her eyes seemed to light up. “You did such an amazing job, I’m in awe.”

“It’s just my job, no need to thank me. Just enjoy your time at the ball tonight,” she said, bowing her head to me before she turned and opened the door, to expose Lorena. “Alpha,” Jules bowed to her before she hurried off. My eyes scanned over Lorena, giving her a wide smile at the sight of her. We looked like total opposites, I was in all white and she was in all black. It made her look so beautiful.

“Oh my Goddess, you look great,” she gasped under her breath as she walked into the bathroom. She grabbed onto my hands and squeezed tightly, her smile never leaving her face. “Tonight is going to be so good for you, just you wait. Today was made for you - for us,” she says in a pep talk kind of way. I smiled and squeezed her hands back. “I could go on about how much I love you, but I know you know that and we need to head on. So, come on.” She tugged me out of the bathroom and through the hallways.

We made our way downstairs, where here the Alpha stood at the bottom of the steps. Her mother had passed away during childbirth, so she wasn’t here. And my mother wasn’t here because she refused to be in the same room as Alpha Christian. He looked up as we got closer and his eyes landed on me. I held his stare, not backing down. He ignored the defiance I showed and looked over me before nodding in approval. I scoffed and rolled my eyes. I watched as his eyes landed on Lorena and a smile went to his face. “You look beautiful, honey,” he says to her once we are close enough and he pulls her away from me and hugs her to his chest.

I ignore their words to one another and walked past them, going towards the front door. I looked out the window and saw a limo was pulled into the pavement and the driver was out of his car, holding up a board that said ‘Adela Ronnell.’ Wow, Alpha Christian really did go all out just to see me out of the pack. “Um, my ride’s here. I’m just gonna go.”

“Bye Adela, I love you!” Lorena called to me as I opened the front door. I replied back to her with the same words before I closed the door behind me and walked out to the man, giving him a small nod. He gave me a bow, which was weird, but I ignored it and got in the car.

I leaned back in my seat and look out the window through the very tinted windows outside. I didn’t care if it were dark from my perspective, I was just happy to be able to see the outside. As the driver got in and started the car and drove away, I winced at the feeling. I hadn’t ridden in a car since I was little. I sighed and closed my eyes and just tried to relax.

-----

“... ma’am… ma’am, we’re here,” I felt someone gently shaking me to wake up and I blinked my eyes opened, looking around groggily. I must have fallen asleep in the car. I looked up to the driver, who offered me a hand to get out. I quickly collected myself and grasped onto his hand and pulled myself out. “Here you are, ma’am. I will be back at midnight to pick you up.” He bowed to me before he hurried back to the driver’s side.

I turned to look up at the building he had dropped me off at and my eyes widened. This place was huge, it looked like a manor of some sort. I wouldn’t have expected they would put a Zeta in a building as beautiful as this, but what did I know? This was only my first year old enough to come to one of these balls. I walked up the steps to the entrance, where a guard escorted me to the ballroom. The inside of the building of even more spectacular, with a sort of 15th century vibe, however it seemed to hold itself together well.

The ballroom was anything you would read out of a princess book. This was all so fancy and put together, however it seemed like they were trying way too hard. If this was the experience for Zeta’s, I wondered what it was like for Alpha’s. The guard left me and went back probably to grab the next person. I looked around, seeing everyone was just as dressed up as I was. It surprised me that everyone here had the money to spend on dresses or suits for themselves. I knew first hand that being Zeta meant having little money.

I took in a deep breath before I began to venture around the ballroom.
