sweet home california

Prologue

I’ve been dreading this day.

It’s crazy how your life can do a whole 360 in just one day.

One day you can be coming home from school thinking it’s just a normal routined day to receiving the most life changing news.

I thought I had the next four years planned out.

Go to a university that is not far from home so I can visit dad and Mia once in awhile, study business and marketing, and go from there…

But now I am on my way to California to live with my mother.

Beep beep

“Why is there so much traffic,” Mia yells honking at the cars in front of us.

“Our flight did land just in time for rush hour,” I sigh scrolling through my Instagram feed.

“I don’t remember there being so much traffic,” Mia says honking the horn again.

I look up at Mia giving her the sympathy smile, “We haven’t been here since were little.”

Mia has been taking this move harder than I was. Yes I was expecting to stay in New York and study in one of the best university, but I had to say goodbye to New York and whatever plans I had there and hello to California. Unlike me, Mia was already onto her second year of college when we got the news but decided it was best to transfer and move with me.

My dad got a phone call one day from mom saying that she wants to be in our lives more. She made herself into something after all these years but recently she’s been feeling alone and depressed. He thought it would be a good idea if we would just try to build that mother daughter relationship instead of just seeing each other on birthdays and holidays.

It would have been a lie to say that my sister and I never thought of that and talked about it during our midnight conversations, so the decision was ultimately up to us. But now it just feels so...real.

I placed my hand on her arm to reassure her that we are doing the right thing, “Everything is going to be fine Mia.”

Silence enveloped the car until she finally sighed, “I don’t know what to expect. It’s not the same as when she came to visit, we’ll be actually be living with her for god knows how long.”

I shut my eyes for a second because I know she’s right it’s going to take time to adjust, “I’m nervous too, this is such a big change but we will have each other and that’s what matters.”

We’ve always have each other’s back. I don’t know what I would have done if she decided to stay back in New York. Leaving dad was the hardest thing to do but I know Cindy and his family will be there for him.

We finally made it to the exit and the GPS says that we have made it to our destination to a beautiful beachfront home.

Let the chaos begin.
