Prologue

Eleanor’s POV

“Alright babe, I’ll be there in seven hours. You’ve stayed away from me for a week, I bet you can stay for another seven hours”, he whispered into the phone.

“Okay okay, it’s just that I’ve never been away from you for one week. I’ve missed you like crazy”, I replied as I held my cell phone in one hand and brought the freshly baked pie out of the oven via my other hand.

“Yeah, so I’ll see ya soon. I’m driving now, can’t talk”, he spoke in a muffled voice.

“Can’t wait to have you back. Drive safe, I love you”, I said, placing the pie on the kitchen counter.

“I love you”, he chirped on the other end and hung up.

My husband would be home after a week and I’ve missed him so much.

He’s never been away from me for more than two or three days ever since our wedding. We would complete three years of our wedding in four months.

I baked this favourite chocolate pie with just the right amount of every necessary ingredient in it.

Alright, I had seven hours to kill before Max got home.

I decided to binge watch one of the on going television shows.

My phone buzzed six hours later as I was lazily sprawled across the couch in our living room.

It was an unknown caller id.

I answered it anyway and a heavy male voice spoke with thick accent.

“Hello, is this Mrs. Jefferson?“, he questioned.

“Yes, this is”, I replied as I lowered the volume which blared from the television.

“Wife of Mr. Maxwell Jefferson?“, he asked slowly.

“Yes, I am”, I replied anxiously.

“Ma’am, I’m Sergeant Williamson. I’m sorry to say this over the phone, but your husband is dead”, he said uneasily.

What?

“What? Are you crazy?“, I yelled at him, hoping this was some sort of prank by a bunch of crazy teenagers.

“I’m sorry ma’am. This is Maxwell Jefferson I’m taking about”, he repeated Max’s name.

Maxwell Jefferson.

Max.

My Max.

“A certain eyewitness stated that the victim’s SUV was hit by a heavy duty trailer. We’re tracking down the trailer as the eyewitness noted the number of the trailer. I need you to come to The Columbus Division, Ohio. I believe you’re a resident of Ohio?“, he spoke in a soft voice.

“Yes”, I whispered as uncontrollable tears streamed down my face.

“And where was he travelling from?“, he asked.

“Tennessee. Work purpose”, I sobbed uncontrollably.

“Yes ma’am. Please come to TCD and collect your husband’s belongings and also, clear the necessary documents because it’s an interstate issue. I’m sorry again”, he said as he hung up, leaving me in my worst state.
