SWEET RIDE
harley watched her tan complexion fall emotionless as she examined her reflection. her deep blue eyes trailed along her freckled cheeks, her musky brown locks kept messily behind her ears. she wasn’t heavily satisfied with her simple and bland appearance, but it would have to do. pulling her baby blue bag over her bare shoulders, she waited by her window for her drive. she should be happy, she thought bitterly. the carnival with two of her best friends; it couldn’t be better. but she knew that her happiness would ever so quickly be replaced with a fake bliss and encouragement towards the two. harley had already begun to mentally phrase how she’ll praise lilia when lucas asks to go on the ferris wheel with her, leaving harley to sit on her lonesome and ponder why he couldn’t have chosen her. she knew why lucas couldn’t have chosen her, because she was nothing but a lousy best friend who held the key to her gorgeous best friend; who not to mention was head over heels for lucas. she’d like to think she was incredibly good at keeping herself together whenever they talked about each other, but sometimes she wish they would disappear; along with the bitter feeling she had.
“come on!!” lilia cried out grabbing his hand tightly pulling him along, she only followed slowly behind. watching their hands slip out of their grasp after he caught up to her. she mentally cursed at him; you idiot ! if you want her you could have easily kept that going. she was evidently held back from the two in line, the man explaining she could go next round. her blood boiled as she turned on her phone and away from the ride.
“harper ! i’ll wait to go with you, lilia went on with another girl and there wasn’t any room.” Lucas spoke with a grin on his face as harper wanted nothing to do with him. of course he was her best friend and she loved him with everything she had in her, but it was so difficult to feel the constant tension between them, the powerful feeling that made her heart bubble whenever they touched; and watch him throw it all away for her best friend. someone he hardly spoke to, someone who could never spark the bond they had, ever.
he leaned over to face her, her eyes hesitating to keep them away from his strong stare.
“next.” the man said opening the gate for the two to enter. the two stepped into the slightly rocking bucket, the lights blinking along the rim.
“you first.” he offered as she gladly sat down first, moving as far away from him as possible. the bucket moved so they were now at the top of the wheel, she peered down and could see lilia grinning ear to ear as she stepped out of hers and outside, waving up at the two. Harper grinned down having not spoken a word to lucas.
“harper what’s your deal. you’ve been quiet and secretive and a tad bit of a bitch.” he muttered as harpers head snapped so she was facing him. she had a MILLION things to tear and shred him up with but dare she use them, that was the question. his choice of words made her blood boil a passionate burning hell. the fact that he could so unknowingly pull at her heartstrings and have her at fault made her want to scream and cry and push him right out of the bucket.
“maybe, you don’t know when to stop. you don’t know when to lay off. you don’t know how to figure out that someone pours everything they have into making you happy, maybe you never notice that what you and lilia have could NEVER come close to what we have, did you ever think of that? huh, no i bet you haven’t because unlike i, you are ignorant and oh so god damn oblivious to the point where it hurts me. but who cares, as long as you can get to lilia than what’s the point of us even being friends.” she could feel the familiar sting begin in her eyes as she couldn’t bare to take a breath of air. her face was blooming with a blotchy red as her emotions had finally slipped.
Lucas looked at her so clueless of what to respond with, his face was pale as a ghost but his cheeks burned an embarrassed red. that was all it took for him. he had questioned it before, every time he noticed a skip in his heartbeat whenever she looked simply beautiful or when they had laughed so hard that the two became historical, her hand grabbing his in attempt to control herself. all of it added up to give him the obvious answer that could have been solved long before.
“is lilia watching?” he asked, his voice confident for what he was preparing.
harper glared at him; her blazing frustrated eyes burning holes through his pale skin.
“what does that matter.” she responded bitterly, as their bucket began to lower from the very top.
“you’re right it doesn’t matter.” he concluded, leaning forward to press his lips against hers in a long awaited moment of pure passion, the burning tension unfolding with every second he felt her against him. he could feel her loosen up as the realization of the moment reached her, he placed his hand against her tear stained cheek as her hands found their way into his brown locks.
they pulled away quickly as the ride began to slow down, lilia looking down at her phone missing what could have brought fresh salty tears to her eyes.
the two stepped out with bashful grins painted on their red lips.
“ready to go!” lilia said walking up to lucas, purposefully brushing her hand against his. she bravely grabbed onto his hand for a few beats before he left to buy them cotton candy.
lilia raced to harper excitedly who replaced her frown with a fake smile.
“i held his hand !! did you SEE that harper !!” she rambled as harper held back a laugh.
“holy that’s pretty advanced in the romantic department.” harper spoke sarcastically as lilia rolled her eyes,
“what do you want me to kiss him or something because we are NOT ready for that, we’re hardly even thinging yet.” lilia stated turning back to meet with lucas. harper grinned at the ground walking slowly to the two.
“cotton candy?” lucas asked pushing a clump of the cloud like sweetness into her mouth. she smiled as the cloud melted satisfyingly in her mouth.
“you’ve got some on your cheek, sorry let me get it.” he said as he turned to make sure lilia was distracted before kissing her briefly on the cheek.
“got it.”
“i’m sure you did, smooth one.”
he grinned goofily and in that moment wished for nothing more.
how she would tell lilia,
well that’s another story.
