Chapter 1
I closed my door behind me, making sure to lock it before I left. Not that i had much of vallue, i just didn't like the idea of someone getting into my house without me knowing. The thought alone gave me chills. I tried to shake it of by putting my headphones on and picking my latest music list. The headphones were my most prized possesion, i got them from my mom a long time ago. They were dark red and vintage.
My mood instantly lifted, i didn't mind the skip in my step or my lips singing a few lyrics aloud. I didn't mind if i looked foolish. It's not like there is someone out at half past four in the morning except maybe a lost jogger.
After about 20 minutes i arrived at my destination, a small diner at the edge of town. 'Danny's' it was called. The name spelled out on top of the building gave off a red glow.
I pushed the door -that was begging for a touch up- open. I was immediately hit by an amazing scent coming from the kitchen. It seemed my stomach got the memo cause it chose that moment let me know how hungry i was.
'I'm guessing you haven't had breakfast yet...?' Spoke a voice from behind me.
I turned around and replied: 'How did you get that idea?'
'Because i know you, and i heard your stomach rumble from the other side of the diner.'
'Is that Kenna?' I heard from the kitchen.
I turned around just in time to catch a little girl soaring threw the sky. I held her and spinned us around. She laughed while i put her down.
'Hey, Winnie my lovely sidekick. How was it at your dads? Had fun?'
'Well..-'
Her mother Catherine cut her off: 'He was busy, so she spent the last weeks with my mother.'
'Ooh, well i'm sure gran took good care of you?'
She looked up and her smile came back. 'Yes! I got to make a blanket ford and sleep in it! And, and she made cookies everyday!'
I looked back to Catherine and saw that she was looking a bit pale. I turned back to Elowen (hence the nickname Winnie), and said: 'Why don't you go see if Henry has some food to spare, i'm quite hungry.'
'Oke, i'll be back!' She said over her shoulder while sprinting to the kitchen. I turned back to Catherine, took her had and led her to a chair. 'What happend?'
'He, he didn't come to pick her up and-'
'Who didn't pick her up?'
'Arnold, she was supposed to spent with her father like i told you. So when he didn't show up. I knew something was wrong. I searched online, and- and i found out what happend. He assaulted a woman. She- she got knocked down and afterwards she couldn't stand up on her own. The cops were called and he got taken away. I don't know what to do Kenna.'
I take a deep breath and try to comprehend the situation, it's alot. I grab her hands in mine and look into her dark brown eyes.
'Everything will be okay, you know i'm here for you.'
'No, Kenna. Things will not be okay. I knew he was bad news. But i didn't know it would go this far. Elowen doesn't know him. He's made it clear he wants to see her. He has to go to court next weekend. And he is being monitered untill then. But i'm scared he will try to get to her. I'm scared Elowen will be in danger. I can't take that risk. He knows where i live, he knows where to find us.'
I give a small squeeze in her hands. 'He knows where you live. But he doesn't know where i do.'
