The office
A long time ago, I decided I wanted to be a detective. I yearned to be just like Dad, even though I never met him because he was killed during a heist before I was born. Mom is always telling me stories about him. I don't think she ever moved on from Dad, even after 21 years. I always thought that fulfilling the lifelong dream of becoming a detective would make me feel closer to him if you know what I mean. All my life, I have strived to do my best and not waste time, not even on love, and in the end, it has paid off because now I am a detective for the L.A. police force. I headed to work after getting my usual tea and muffin from Fritters.
Our secretary, Alyssa, waved me over as I entered the building. "The boss wants to see you in his office in half an hour," Alyssa informed me.
"Thank you, Alyssa," I replied.
"It's no problem. I'm just doing my job. Have a great day and good luck with the boss," she said as I walked away.
"Have a great day as well," I said back.
As usual, I went to the second floor and walked four doors down to my office. As I sat at my desk, my mind started to wander. "What does Mr. Harris want?" I wondered. He was an excellent boss if you were on his good side, which, thankfully, I was. However, when it came time to see him, I felt the knot that had formed in the pit of my stomach; even though I was anxious, I kept my composure. I walked to the third floor and down the long hallway to the left. As I approached the polished chestnut door, I saw a shiny golden plaque that said in bold letters, "Bill Harris: Head Chef of LA Police Force." I knocked once, and he called me into his office.
"Ms. Black, please take a seat," he said as I entered and sat in one of the black leather chairs. I was so nervous I couldn't talk, so I just listened.
"Ms. Black, as you know, you have a clean record. You graduated at the top of your class in both high school and the LA police academy. On top of everything else, for the last two years, you have done great work for us with your partner Lance," he said confidently.
I took a breath and relaxed slightly as he paused. " Ms. Black, we are sending you to work for a special organization because you have the ability, determination, and discipline for the job. Police forces often send their best agent, and this year, it's you." He said as I sat there in complete shock.
" Go pack up your office. The car will be here to pick you up at 10:00." He said as I stood up.
"Thank you, sir, this is an amazing opportunity," I expressed gleefully.
