Chapter 1

Every morning just as my grandfather's clock struck three, my eyes would fly open to stare at the sagging brown ceiling above. I would stare at it, wondering why I was awake at that time of the morning .

Always I would wonder and shift my body position to face the room door, just in time to watch the neighbors' cat slip in, green eyes aimed solely at me in the darkness.

I knew it was a witch; everyone knew Mama Jisi, the owner of the crumbling mud house beside ours, had dark magic.

The cat would take a good look at me like it wants to decide on something before it turns around, tail flicking arrogantly as it goes out.

This began to bother me after the same thing happened for three days straight, bringing an eery de ja vu feeling.

This time, my sister came to stay for the weekend and we slept on the same bed. I think I dreamt of something but as my eyes mechanically flew open, I forgot it.

I was staring at the brown ceiling once more and I thought something moved... maybe a lizard on the wall or a rat. Or maybe that goddamn cat.

Flipping over, I stared at the door waiting for the cat to come and stare at me so I could feel the chills its eyes always gave me so I could be done with it.

But the cat didn't come, to much of my relief. Now I could go back to sleep again.

I must have dozed off because the next time my eyes opened, I was facing the ceiling where two green eyes stared back at me.
