*CHAPTER ONE
When someone tells you, that you are a mistake, abomination. What will be your first thought? That this person is out of their mind or will you actually think, that this person is right. That I am a mistake, an abomination. That I wasn't supposed to exist.
The sun was shining through the curtains, indicating it was already morning. My eyes were stinging from the sudden light, I couldn't sleep so I had kept on staring at the nearest wall to pass time. It has been always like this. I don't remember when I actually had a good nights sleep. I turned around to face my other bare wall as the bed I slept in creaked in protest. The attic, where I resided was all that I had. With four walls surrounding me and a roof on my head, I was satisfied.
I finally gave up and sat upright, stretching my aching muscles. I needed to go have a bath and get the hell out of here before anyone wakes up. I couldn't take any more damage. I had had enough, I kept on protesting and protesting in my head, but in the end I'll end up with bruises on my body. Maybe this was a way of life.
Sometimes I wondered, if I had been born somewhere else, what would life be like? Will it be bearable? Will I be able to go a day without.....Enough of my depressing thoughts, I stood up and rummaged through the box near my bed to find something to wear. Today, I found a grey large T-shirt with worn out blue skinny jeans. At least I had these to wear, I smiled internally trying to grasp onto anything that made me happy. Even if someone smiled at me, it would make my day.
I tiptoed quietly towards the bathroom, hoping that no one was awake at five in the morning. I entered and stripped, having a quick bath with the cold water. I wasn't allowed hot water. They said it was only for the family members. I dried myself and put on my clothes, not even looking at my body because once I do, I would be reminded of all the bitter memories I kept hidden.
I quietly opened the bathroom door, peeking if everyone was still sleeping, so I tiptoed up the stairs of the attic and quickly donned my old converses, carried my bag pack and quietly ran towards the front door. I was about to grasp the door knob when a cough stopped me. Someone was awake. Shit. I didn't dare open the door, for I was scared I would make a sound. The footsteps padded upstairs as the person was walking. My breath was lodged in my throat, waiting and waiting to see where the person goes. I hope they don't come downstairs and see me in all my glory. I prayed waiting for a miracle. The door to the bathroom opened and shut with a bang, making me wince at the noise. I sighed, opening the front door and making a run for it. Lucky me.
I lodged my backpack on my shoulder, finger combing my hair to get rid if the knots. I made sure that I never miss school even though I was sick, I couldn't miss it. It was my escape from reality. I could sit in the library after school and read to my heart's content. The school came into view, Newberry high school stood out because of its red brick walls and huge windows. It looked more of a hospital than a school.
I had always been the first one to school, even earlier than the gate man so I had to wait approximately thirty minutes for him to come. He was an old man with a huge set of keys in his hands. I would greet him and he would smile at me, giving my heart a start and I would also smile at him brightly. He was the only one who I could smile at, without being slapped or shoved. His name was Andrew, he had white hair that sat neatly on his petite head. He was way shorter than me and I sometimes wondered that if I had a grandfather, he would look like Andrew. He never asked me, why I was always the first one. He just looks at me and smiles.
Currently the weather was freezing, and I couldn't feel my hands. I didn't own any jumpers or hoodies, and the T-shirt I wore was so worn out that I could literally feel cold air seeping through my bones. My teeth steered chattering as I tried to rub my hands on my body to create heat. Where was Andrew when I needed him now? It felt like thirty minutes had passed and still no sign of Andrew. I would die of pneumonia outside the school doors and they would find my body all cold and blue. This is the end of the line for you Amna.
My limbs were becoming heavy, and I couldn't feel my fingertips. I tried slapping my face to make the blood move. My nose felt like a icicle that was about to snap. When I was about to fall down and lose all hope, someone draped their jacket around my shoulders, giving me instant relief. I quickly turned around to see someone I was not expecting. Damien Knight, aka mystery boy, also the person you run away from after spotting him. And here he was in his majestic glory, giving me his warm jacket.
I think the cold freezed my brain, because I couldn't form any coherent thought nor sentence. I once read in a book, that when you see a perfect human being your senses are lost. Damien was the epitome of gorgeous. His black hair was tucked in a white beanie. His grey eyes assessing me as I stared him down. Amna speak, before he thinks I'm you're a weirdo.
"Oh, thank you." I spoke quickly making his lips curl the slightest. Was that a smile? He never smiles, unless his freaking the crap out of someone. "It's fine, I saw you were about to faint in front of the school." Don't you own any jumpers?" He spoke making me question my sanity. Am I awake or I am still staring at my attic wall and conjoining images of this specimen.
"Uh.....", what should I tell him? That my parents refuse to buy me clothes, that they won't care even if I die in front of the school. "I lost my jacket and I didn't tell my parents about it." I know what most of you are thinking, that how come you have only one jacket in this cold weather. That was the only lie I could come up with.
"But, aren't girls supposed to have like dozens of clothes to choose from." he asked. I wish I was on those girls. I wish my parents bought me unnecessary stuff and spoil me. "No, I am OK with one." I tried to smile but I think it came out as a grimace because Damien didn't seem convinced." I'll return your jacket." I told him. He nodded and walked away. Great Amna, you scared him.
Damien got in his car and sped off away from school. That kid, he doesn't really care about his grades because his dad has more money than sense. He can take over the family business without anyone questioning his grades. Well it's his life.
After a while, Andrew finally arrived. "I am so sorry, my granddaughter was sick, so I had to drop her to the hospital." he spoke as he fumbled with the keys. "It's OK, Andrew. How is she doing?" I asked trying to help the old man lessen some tension. "Oh she's doing well now. She had the flu." I nodded in understanding, because I had flu so many times but I had no one to take me to the hospital. I would eventually sleep on it. It usually worked.
After the eventful morning, I made my way to the class, knowing I had a history class first thing in the morning. I set my books on my table and decided to finish my homework.
To me school maybe a way of forgetting the realities at home but it still had it's disadvantages, that no matter how much time had passed, I still can't get over it. These are the bullies, boys and girls. If they see you're doing much better than them, they will make it their life goal to bring you down, no matter what way. In our school only, there has been five cases of attempted suicide because of the one and only Esmeralda. She is the girl, whom you see on front covers of magazines, but her personality is way worse.
She might have a pretty face and a body to die for but her manners and characters are her biggest flaw. She can kill you with her words and I am one of those victims. You see the twist here is that Esmeralda is my half sister aka the daughter of the parents who hate me with their every pore. She has made it her life goal, to abuse and violate me at any given time if the day and sometimes she can go further and physically harm me. I have scars to prove that, but no one in our school can go against her.
In adults eyes, she is an angel and a sweetheart but we teenagers know the reality. No one can stand up to her and if they do, harm will be coming their way. I have made my life goal on avoiding Esmeralda till I turn eighteen and ran away from this town. Currently am sitting in class with fellow classmates waiting for the history teacher to walk in and drone about the past. And I have the same class with Esmeralda so I get to make myself as tiny as possible. In my lucky days she might even abuse me and walk away but sometimes when she's in a bad mood she can harm me physically, even in front of other students. It's kind of sad that I can't stand up for myself.
The teacher walked in after an eternity and then walked in Esmeralda with her entourage. Today she wore a white blouse with a tiny blue skirt that, I might add that doesn't cover her anything. She paired it with knee high socks and black heels. Her makeup was on point and her blonde hair was straightened and open. My step parents, gave her everything because they were proud of her. Sometimes I wondered what was it like to be in Esmeralda's shoes. Will I be treated better?
I took my history book and placed it in front of me, to block my view but unfortunately her eyes had already seen me and a smirk took place on her face. "Esmeralda, you're late. And your friends also." Mr Daniel spoke looking at her."Sorry sir, we had gotten into a ladies emergency." she said whilst batting her eyelashes. "Well, hope you make it on time in the future."
She nodded, snapped her fingers, then they all started walking and took over the front seats. Girls.
Mr Daniel was a peculiar type of person, with black unruly hair, a suit that made him look fat and his beer belly on display. He was the teacher, who you could chill with but when it comes to class he doesn't take anyone's Shit. I wish I was like him but am too damaged to go back. An uninterrupted thought creeped in my brain. Today was Monday, meaning family dinner. My stomach was quesy, because I hadn't had anything since Saturday and I hated family dinners. The part where you can get humiliated so much that you question your existence.
The history lesson finally ended, signalling the time for me to run for my life. I picked my books and was about to make a dash for the door when a heel clad leg almost tripped me. Esmeralda had 'accidentally'put her foot there. Well I guess today isn't my lucky day."Oops, sorry I didn't see you there." She fake smiled, earning giggles from the other girls. "It's fine, I'll just go ahead." I was about to side step her leg when she stood up towering over my tiny frame.
"I didn't say you could leave." she said in mock humour. Where is the teacher when I need him. He must have gone on his coffee break. Shit, how do I get out of this one? "But am getting la......," I was cut short when she slapped me hard. My face turned to the left as the pain danced across my whole face."I didn't say you could speak either." she sneered as her friends looked at her in confusion. Tears threatened to fall but I had to hold it in, or it will become worse.
"Leave her alone, Esma." Catherine, one of Esmeralda's friends spoke. Esmeralda looked at her then back at me. She then grabbed my hair with her talon like hand and came immposibly close to my face, whispering only for me to hear. "Today is Monday, the day dad beats you up." My heart pounded loudly in my chest as I remembered all those Monday's I suffered. She left my hair and walked away, her entourage following her. Catherine stayed for a second giving me a sympathetic look and scurried away. Just then Mr Daniel walked in," Oh, did I miss something?" he asked me, I hurriedly wiped my face, put a smile and answered,"no, everything is fine." He nodded as I walked away towards my next class.
I had math now. It was one of the most boring subjects, and I hated it. Our teacher was Mrs Lee, she had come from China to teach us and she was this mean, strict old lady who would do anything to get the job done. One time, I heard that she had gone to a boy's house to get his homework because he was a slacker. Then she told his parents and he was grounded. If she came home and told my parents, I think they will find my body the next day so I always do my homework. Always.
I entered the class and was greeted with a new face, a handsome new face. In Mrs Lee's spot was a young man, who was engrossed in his papers. His hair was gelled back and he wore a suit but the jacket was hanged on his chair. His jawline from here looked lethal and I was instantly drawn to him. He looked up and I was amazed at how perfect this guy was. His green eyes looked at me and his lips opened to say something. "Hello, take a seat." I snapped out of my trance and nodded, walking away as fast as I could to the back if the class. Oh god Amna you can't have a crush on your teacher.
The class filed and I was glad I didn't share this class with Esmeralda. But who walked in last momentarily stunned me. Damien Knight in his glory opened the door with a bang and scanned the room. Girls sat straight, some sneakily checked their makeup, so he could sit with them. Girls, am I right? Damien was way hotter than the new teacher, or maybe that's my opinion. He walked inside scanning the room and then his eyes met mine. I looked away, thank god there was no seat available beside me. He walked over and glared at the boy next to me. The guy ran for his life as Damien plopped next to me. He nodded and I nodded and the class began. Lord what the hell!
Hey guys, this is my first ever book. Please read and write reviews, and I hope you enjoy this story.
