Chapter 1 - Life as I know it
Victoria
Today was like a lot of other days, I was helping mommy with the house work. The baby in her tummy is getting really big, so I have to be her big helper. Being a big sister seams like it’s going to be a lot of work, but I can’t wait. I hope it's a girl. As we finish up the house work, mamma says to me, “Because we worked so hard, we can go to the park near the store after we are done shopping.”
When we finally got to the store mom puts me in the cart and starts pushing me around. As we shopped I see this man walking behind us. He wore a hat that is my favorite color, just like my eyes, green! He keeps looking and making faces at me making me giggle. I tried to tell mommy but she said we had to hurry if we wanted to go to the park so I quickly forgot about the man with the hat. Helping mamma remember what we need is what we need to do so I have to focus. Soon we were done and mom paid for our stuff. Finally we get to the park mom sits down on a bench and tells me to go play just not to run off to far.
I carefully give her a big, long hug and a kiss before running onto the park to play. Making my way up the huge metal slide steps, hurrying to the top smiling as wave to mommy and quickly slide down. As my feet hit the floor they start sprinting with the speed of the slide all the way across the park near the swings. With excitement I swiftly turn around to mamma to see if she saw me but she was on her phone. Turning back around to the swing I see the man with the green hat is looking for something under the bench.
My curiosity got the better of me even tho my parents say not to ever talk to strangers... But he looks like nice man and he has my favorite color hat. So I walk over to him and ask what are you looking for mister? With a sad smile he says I’m looking for my little puppy. The puppy he explains is only like 3lbs and a little bigger then his hand. He showed me how big his hand was. The man says it would really help if I could look for his doggy with him and I can even give him a treat when we find him but we would have to go get them first...
I looking over at mommy. The man touches my shoulder to get me to look up at him then says he knows my daddy and told my daddy and that he needed my help. So my dad told him we were at the park too and that I would help him. So you know my daddy Tim? With a big smile the man says Timmy is the best man I know. I agree with a little smile, but tell him we have to hurry because my mamma will worry. He smiles wide telling me that’s not a problem. I smile big now knowing my mom won’t be mad at me for helping find the baby doggy because shes on the phone with dad now telling her I can.
We start walking to the man's car he tells me his name is Darrick. Hes a tall muscular man with shoulder length black hair, kind blue eyes and a small goatee. He says he works with my daddy. I look up smiling while saying you know my name is Victoria but I like Vicky better. He looks down at me and says if you like it better then Vicky it is then. I ask him if he likes working on the roads for the city like my dada? He smile and says it hard work but its fun work especially when he works with Tim. We get to his truck and he opens the door and asks me to look for them because he needs to tie his sneaker. I give him a nod of my head and jump in the big, green truck. Sitting on the floor of it, the first place I look is under the seat.
No doggy treats. But before I could look any where else Darrick shuts the door to the truck and hops in the driver side. He looks at me and says that my dad texted him and told him to take me to his house because the baby is coming. Kids aren’t allowed in the room, Darrick explains. With a small frown and a nod he starts driving when I remember his little puppy. Looking up at Darrick from the passenger seat I was now buckled up into, I ask what about finding the doggy? He glances over to me with a small frown on his face mirroring mine and says that he will just have to call the pound tomorrow.
The baby is more important then his puppy and that I will need my rest so he can take me to them tomorrow to see. A little smile pops on my face thinking about seeing mommy, daddy, and the baby. We drove for a little while longer then he pulls onto a dirt road and finally after what seems like forever we pulled into a driveway of a little cabin in the middle of the woods. The door is wood and the house is wood and the roof is green if I wasn’t told there was a house here I would of thought there was just trees grouped all together.
Darrick walked into the little cabin and flicks on a light. It's kinda dark still, but it's cozy. As I stood at the open door looking in, there was a small kitchen, shiny wood counter tops stainless steel appliances with a little shiny wooden bar with stools on the living room side facing the kitchen. In the okay sized living room there is a love seat with 2 chairs on either side of it. There was a small coffee table in the middle, facing a large fire place. On the side of the living room against the wall, there were 3 doors that were closed. One of the doors has a huge pad lock on it. From what I can see so far there are no windows.
Darrick walks to the fire place in the living room and lights a fire. He turns around and looks at me in a weird way and a small smile on his face before walking over to me. I look up at him as he says, “Hey little, silly Vicky, are you going to stay out there all night? I don’t bite... much.” Then he sticks out his tounge at me. I smiled and giggle well walking into the house over to the couch and sit down while Darrick walks into the kitchen. The warm glow of the fire felt nice against my face. I’m completely oblivious to everything but the fire, I watch as it dances and plays on the burning wood, its so pretty.
