I Got In

“Get the fuck up now!” My mom yells.

It’s my last day in the states and I couldn’t be happier. I received my acceptance letter before I was even a senior in high school. I am going to the University of Cambridge riding on a full scholarship. It is all paid for, my room, board, and even my food. This is what I’ve wanted my whole life, to go away and never return. Get as far as possible from my fucked up life with my fucked up parents and never look back. I’d say halfway around the world is far enough.

I get up from the bed and go take a shower. After I get out and get dressed, I go downstairs and my mom is sitting on the couch watching TV.

“Do you have all that you need to go? Cause we need to get you dropped off at the airport before me and your dad go to the casino.” My mom asks.

“Yes, I got everything,” I say back to her. My bags are packed and ready over by the front door.

“Well if you did you can just forget about it cause I ain’t sending it to you.” She says with an awful look on her face. She gets up and heads towards me. “I’m so fucking glad you are leaving I’m so sick of seeing your ugly face.” She says to me as she hits me hard on the back of my head. I am so used to her and my father hitting me I don’t shed a tear.

“Well, come on let’s get this shit over with.” She says as she opens the front door.

I follow her and get into the car and head off to the airport. I look out the window the whole time soaking in one last look at my homeland. I’m not sad about it. My life has been a living hell as far back as I can remember. I’m not sure how old I was when my parents started beating me. I just remember that I couldn’t do anything right. The first time that I can remember is when I was about four I accidentally dropped my mothers hot coffee on myself trying to bring it to her. It burned like hell. She beat me, leaving bruises all over my skin, on my stomach and back the most. After that, it seemed like a daily thing. Even if I didn’t do anything she or my father would hit me. My father wasn’t as bad as she was though. I think deep down he felt a little sorry for me. Not enough to stop hitting me, but enough to not do it as much as she did.

I get out of the car at the airport and my mom doesn’t even tell me goodbye. As soon as I grab my bags from the back, she takes off. She doesn’t even look back. Whatever I don’t even care. I’m ready to get my life started away from her.

I get on the plane and it’s not as packed as I thought it was going to thank God. I find my seat and much to my enjoyment I have no one on either side of me. I sit down and the chair isn’t too comfortable but it’s not too bad. I listen to the stewardess teach us about all the bells and whistles of riding in a plane and all the safety measures that come with it. The movies that they plan on showing are all movies that I have already seen. Thank God I brought a few my books in my carryon bag. I pull out my favorite book first, a book I have read a million times, Gone With The Wind. I am so in love with this book. Scarlett is such a strong headed woman of her time. I start reading right when the plane takes off. I stop long enough to look down to watch where the land disappears and the ocean appears. Goodbye America. I will miss you.

The flight from isn’t too, long a little over ten hours. I can’t believe I made it. I’m really here! I’m at my new home!

I grab my bags from the luggage return and head for the door. I wave down a cab.

“Where to miss?” The cab driver says. I’m not used to hearing the British accent, but I love it.

“Cambridge, please,” I say back.

“You’re American aren’t you?” The cab driver asks me looking into the rearview mirror at me.

“Yes, I am,” I answer with a small smile.

“Welcome to the U.K. I hope it is good to you.” He says with a smile.

“Thank you! I have no doubts that it will be good for me. I have always wanted to come here.” I tell him.

We fall into a not so awkward silence as I stare out the window taking in all of the beauty of London. The buildings and people are all so beautiful. I am just in awe. The cab ride takes about two hours to get to Cambridge University.

I am floored when Cambridge University comes into my view. I have done a lot of research on this place, seen all kinds of images but it is nothing compared to the real thing. It looks like big castles everywhere. It just reeks of history. I am truly in love.
