When Stragedy Strikes
The scene that laid in front of me was absolutely terrifying and horrific. The ambulance has just came and people were all around the place watching the incident that was taking place for the past hour. Sounds and voices were being heard from everywhere and I stood amongst all of these as a plain observer.
“Are you okay, Miss?” A policeman asks me worried.
“Y-Yes.” I stutter and stare in the emptiness of the night.
“You have to be taken to the hospital immediately.” A nurse from the ambulance speaks to me and I nod, as I start following her to the vehicle.
All the way to the hospital, I kept thinking of everything that has happened in so little time, in the span of an hour. The drive back to my home from a night out with some classmates of mine, the casual talk I had with my parents in the car, the motorcycle that crashed on to the car’s glass out of the blue, my mum and dad bumping from their front seats and hitting their heads and bodies in the process, blood coming out of everywhere and filling the entire car, their dead bodies being transferred with another vehicle to the morgue, myself shaking in fear and helplessness. Everything escalated in such a short amount of time, that I had not time to comprehend, what has happened, and I felt completely and utterly alone with no one left to be by my side for this difficult time that I had to overcome.
All that I can do for now is go to where I am told and try to calm myself. After that, I have no idea what will happen.
It was nearly morning and I was still stuck in that hospital room, because the doctors told me I had to stay, since I had no one to take care of me. Another painful reminder that my parents were gone forever.
Currently, I was munching on the food in front of me that the nurses had brought for me. At least, I was not starving. That counts for something, I guess.
While I was too invested in my breakfast, a man has come in the room and was standing there, waiting for me to acknowledge his presence.
“Um, hello.”
“Good morning, Miss Burke.” He greeted and I looked at him with a surprised look plastered on my face.
“Do you know me?” I ask him hesitantly.
“I am your parents’ lawyer.” He answered my question and sat on the chair by the bed, I was laying on for the past few hours.
That explains why he is wearing a suit and tie, while the sun is practically just coming out.I nod for him to go on with what he had to say.
“Your parents have left a will for you, in which they leave all of their fortune to you. However, you are not going to be able to have access to it until you’re 18. Which leads me to the next point of their will. They have set as your guardian Mr. and Mrs. Evans, who are also going to be the ones to handle their fortune, until you’re a legal adult.”
“Who are these people?”
“They are your parents’ friends and they live in California.”
“Wait, what? Does that mean I have to move there?” She shots him with questions.
“I am afraid so and this must be done as soon as possible, as well.”
“I am sorry that your life had to change this way and so drastically, but maybe it is for the better.”
“Yeah. Maybe.” I muttered and he left, giving me a sympathetic look, before he did so.
I was still trying to get through my brain what the lawyer has told me about my parents’will. How come they have never told me this before? I haven’t even heard them discussing about it. When did they decide to do this? And who were these people that I’m supposed to live with? Did I know them? And besides everything elsez I had to move states. What the hell?
My life has changed so much in a few hours. Hell has broken loose and I will never be the same again. But whatever happens from now on, I know one thing. I will never be weak again.
The doctor that has been examining me since I came to the hospital, has came again to run another medical test, I guess.
“Hello, Alexa.” He says as soon as he comes in the room. I simply nod as a response.
“I have something really important to tell you.” He stated and I didn’t reply, waiting for him to continue.
“You will be allowed to leave this hospital soon, today if it’s possible. But you have to go to the state, in which live your now legal guardians. You will be taken to airport by an assigned person of our trust and when you land in California, your guardians will be waiting there for you.” He said and didn’t even wait for me to answer, who in the meantime was left with my mouth hanging open.
Within the next hour, I had somehow prepare my things and myself mentally and I was already on my way to the airport alongside with the person escorting me there. Even though, the ride there was beyond quiet and uncomfortable to say the least, in my head there was only chaos and distress, contemplating whether if this choice that was not even taken by me was the right one for me at the moment. But unfortunately, there was no time to waste and surely no time to stand still for a minute and think it through. Deciding that my fate was already sealed, I just sat on my seat in the airplane and drifted off to sleep.
The plane has just landed and it was about time I went off this plane, so I could meet my new ‘family’. If I could even call them that.
In half an hour or so, I was already done with all the procedures and the only thing left to do now was find the people I was supposed to live with. I guess I will never be ready enough for this...
And with these thoughts in my head, I started walking out of the building. As I strut through the hallway, I saw a woman waving her one hand at me and with her other, free hand, she was holding a big label board, that read ‘Alexandra’.
Wait... That’s my name. Oh.
Thus, I started making my way over to the lady holding the platter with my name on it. She looked really beautiful, she must be in her late forties, but in reality she seems much younger. Her attire is quite formal for such a occasion and from her appearance, I guess that she is wealthy.
When I finally reach her, she smiles widely from ear to ear and wraps me around in her arms, giving me a tight to death hug. Seriously, I think I just ran out of fresh oxygen.
“Ehm, excuse me, but who are you?” I asked feeling uncomfortable from all the sudden intimacy.
“Oh, right. I am Samantha. Samantha Evans.” She introduces herself to me.
“Nice to meet you, miss Evans. I am Alexandra.” I reply to her nice statement.
“Please, call me Samantha or Sam. Whichever you like better.“”
“Okay, Samantha.” She nodded at me consenting.
“It will take you a while, but you’ll get used to it at some point.
“Anyways, as I was saying, you don’t have to tell me anything about yourself. I know all about you.” She says in a heartwarming kind of tone.
“Is that so?” I question taken aback by her comment.
“Yeah. Your mum and I user to be really close, when we were younger. We were best friends. But then we grew apart and we didn’t communicate much, as the years passed by.” She explained almost crying mid sentence, but she continued, sweeping away a tear that was threatening to fall, as she tried to regain her composure.
“Oh, really? I didn’t know. Like at all.” I murmured, as we started walking, but she heard me.
“Don’t worry, dear. Very soon, you will find out everything. It will all clear out eventually.” She explained in a mysterious way and I watched her with a quizzical look, but she didn’t notice or at least pretended she didn’t.
“So, how are you holding up?” She asked after a short pause of silence.
“Barely, but I am trying.” I answered her question sincerely, since I felt as if I could tell her everything. She really brought me out trust.
“It must be really difficult for you.” She said compassionately trying to make me feel better.
“I just hope everything that happens from now on is for the best.” I tell her, before she comes to a halt before an amazing limo like car, that must belong to multimillionaire, seeing it costs approximately a million, to say the least. It’s really a miracle car, coming right out of the future and made in heaven for all I know.
“Won’t you get in?” Samantha asker me genuinely worried about my shook state, not being able to move from the shock.
“Where?” I asked dumbfounded.
“In the car. ” She answered, as if it was obvious.
“Is this your car?”
“Why? Don’t you like it?” She wondered confused at my behavior.
“No, no. It’s perfect. It’s just, that I... I was really, really surprised. But in a bad way. In like the best way possible.” I explained feeling a little embarrassed, my face flustered red and cheeks blushed.
“Well, hop in then and enjoy.” She smiled and got in the front seat, as I snaked up in the back seats.
