Nine Years Ago
“Mama can we please please go ice skating!” Tazanna begged her mom. They were in the kitchen while Tazanna’s mom was making lunch with Tazanna’s twin brother, Tyler sitting on the counter munching on an Oreo.
“I said no, Tazanna! Now go wash your hands, lunch is done.” Her mom dismissed her. Tazanna pouted up at her mom and started crying.
“Mama, please! I really wanna go! Please! I’ll not ask for anything else! Pleeeaaassseee!” Tazanna pushed, she didn’t want to give up. She desperately wanted to go ice skating, especially with her brother. She and her brother do everything together and ice skating was their favorite. It was even Tyler who suggested they go but they both knew their mom would say no if Tyler asked so Tazanna asked knowing that she could eventually get her to say yes, and that’s exactly what happened. Their mom looked down on her and raised her brows with her hands on her hips.
“This is the last time you are like this okay? When I say no, that’s it. Now Eat then go get ready. I mean it, the last time.” She said then turned around to make her kids a plate. Tazanna turned to her twin and gave him a goofy grin with a thumbs up. He grinned back and winked at her, finishing his cookie. She ran and gave her mom a hug from behind.
“Thank you, mama! I love you so much!” She giggled and ran to the bathroom to wash her hands with Tyler running after her. Their mom shook her head and smiled.
“They’ll both be the death of me.”
“Come on mama! Let’s go!” Tazanna said jumping out of the car with excitement. Their mom turned off the car and sighed dramatically. She followed the twins to the skating rink and bought their skates. She helped them put them on and let them go into the rink, keeping a close eye on them. All she saw was her beautiful twins laughing and having fun.
“Come on Ty! Catch up! Slowpoke!” Tazanna yelled looking behind her to smile at her brother. His grin turned immediately turned into fear.
“TAZ! WATCH OUT!” He yelled right as his sister ran into a body which had her body falling backwards making her head slam on the ice.
“TAZANNA!” Tyler yelled and caught their mom’s attention. She ran onto the ice carefully trying to get to her unconscious daughter. Tyler fell on his butt next to her and pulled her into his lap crying.
“Tazanna, baby! Come on! Wake up!” Her mom grabbed her from Tyler and carried her out of the rink, running to the bench to grab her phone to call nine-one-one. She couldn’t stop the tears that were falling from her eyes, she feared for her daughter’s life, not wanting to lose her.
“Tyler?” Tazanna rasped out as she slowly started to wake up in the hospital. She tried opening her eyes but all she saw was foggy colors. She started crying out for her brother until she heard a soft voice in her ear. Her mom.
“Mama! Why can’t I see?!” She yelled in between sobs. She felt her mom’s head fall on her shoulder while silent cries came from her.
“Baby listen to me. When you were skating, you fell and hit the ice, you got hurt bad and we had to take you to the hospital. You’ll be okay but baby, you lost your sight. You’re blind.” Her mom softly said. Tazanna’s sobs got louder. She just wanted to be home with her brother and watch a movie while her mom wanked her hair with a brush. She didn’t want this; she didn’t want to be here. She just wanted everything to go back to normal.
