Prologue

Marric Two Years Earlier (2016)

A deep sigh is exhaled, he swivels the contents of his glass in a circular motion. His face is complacent as he contemplates what has been said. Finally looking up at her, into her golden-brown eyes his face showing nothing yet to his answer. She is standing her ground, her arms crossed just below her chest, feet placed shoulder length apart as her toe taps the floor through her nude heel.

He sips and swishes the drink in his mouth to attempt to erase the taste of a bile that had come up as soon as he heard her words. Swallowing was slightly more difficult than he had imagined it would be. He stood up, placing the glass down on the desk in front of him as he buttoned his jacket blazer and closed the distance between them, moving his hand up to her jawline, barely brushing his knuckles seeing the shiver run down her.

“Are... you sure.” It wasn’t really a question. It was confirmation as he finally allowed a pang of hurt to touch within him.

“Yes.” She hissed in short, taking a step back to put some distance between them.

“Then say it properly.” He couldn’t help the venom in his voice, he had tried all the tricks he knew as an Alpha to get her to change her mind, to show her he was something worthy of her.

“I reject you as my mate, and cut ties from this pack.” She stated, not a hitch in her voice.

He closed his eyes at the words and pulled his hand back, he had left it reaching towards her when she pulled back. He swallowed deeply, evening out his heart rate and breathing. Ushering a complete calm as he felt the connections of their bond break both as mate and Alpha.

It wasn’t the first time someone had chosen to go Rogue from his pack, but that had been a long while ago. This was much worse this time, as he was losing his mate and his Luna as well as another member of his pack. Nodding his head, he walked over to the window of his office, overlooking the city below. After what seemed like ages, even with the ticking of her foot, he finally resolved within himself.

“I accept your rejection, and I, Marric Baneswood release you from this pack.” His voice projected; command oozed from his words as he spoke the words to release the binding. He could feel it all fade away now, and he welcomed the numbness. Without any more words, he listened without turning as her heels struck the floor and she walked out the door.
