One
Nandini
I was looking at the night sky which was scattered with stars that shined brightly along with the moon. I was basically looking at the two stars that outshined the others. I believed those stars to be my parents. My Amma used to tell me that when they were not near me they would be watching me from the sky.
I didn’t realize that I was crying until the tears touched my cheeks. The truth is I miss them so much. I have always been lonely with no one to share my feelings.
My parents left me alone in this world when I was eight years old. My Appa was a Scientist and my Amma was a Classical singer. One day they were returning from their job when they met with an accident. I never knew anything. All I remember about that night was me looking through the window to see my parents. Next Morning all I saw was my parents lying lifeless covered in white. All my relatives left me in an orphanage and they never turned back.
So, Let me introduce myself. I am Nandini Murthy daughter of Raman and Nandita Murthy. I am eighteen years old. I am living here in Angels Orphanage for the past ten years.
My thoughts were broken when I heard someone calling my name. I turned back and saw Nina Aunty our caretaker calling me for dinner.
I went down and sat at the table. I saw Nina aunty looking at me and I smiled at her. As I started having my food, I heard aunty speaking to me,
“Nandu, have you decided what to do tomorrow?”
“Not yet aunty, but don’t worry I will try for a job.” I replied.
So, the thing is when we reach the age of eighteen we are supposed to leave the orphanage and take care of ourselves. Our orphanage is a very small one which couldn’t accommodate many kids. We lived with the little donations as charity.
Everyone one of us studied at the Government School. I had completed my twelfth last year and wanted to pursue music and business but, our orphanage never had enough money to help me. So, today is my last day here and tomorrow onwards I will have to live by myself.
After dinner, I went to my room and slept thinking that maybe tomorrow can bring a new beginning.
............................
The next morning I got up due to the ring of my alarm. I checked the time and it was just 8am. I am not actually an early riser but, today was an exception. I got dressed and took my luggage and the jar that contained Fireflies. My mother used to tell me that the fireflies will glow when there is true love. And I wish that one day even I would find my true love.
Then I went down and met the kids and others and giving them my farewell I left the place which was my childhood home.
I decided to find a job first so that I will have some money for a small apartment to live in.
After searching for hours I was not able to secure a job. I didn’t even have my lunch all I had was some coffee. I decided to try again but as always I was rejected. Being a high school graduate added difficulty in getting a job.
Time passed now, it was almost 7pm. I was unable to get any job. As I started walking, I started feeling uneasy. I know that walking alone at night was not a great idea. But, with all the courage I had I started walking.
After walking for some time, I realized that someone is following me. And as soon as I turned back I saw three guys following me. As I turned all of them looked at me with an evil smile. That’s when one of them decided to speak,
“Are tum akele kyun jaa rahi ho, hamare sath aa jaao, hame bhi tho kuch masti chahiye.”
Listening their words, fear started to creep in me, but keeping a brave face I said,
“Jaa yahan se.”
“Are hum aise kaise jaayenge, humare saath aao na”, one of the guys said.
All of a sudden the third guy caught me. All the courage I had went with it. I tried all my best to free my hand and the the other two guys started walking closer. Aiyappa…. No I wouldn’t let them take me, deciding this I kicked the guy hard. He moved away crying in pain.
As soon as he left my hand I ran….ran with all my strength. And they too started running behind me and shouting.
I didn’t know what else to do. I went on running and tears flowed down my cheeks. I know want they would do if they get hold of me and there would be no escape. I didn’t know where I was heading to. Turning back I saw them nearing to me and I increased my pace. When all of a sudden I crashed into something hard maybe a wall. Now, from where did this wall come from?
When I looked up I saw it was not a wall but, a man with a hoodie due to which I couldn’t make out his face. All that I could make out was his sharp jaw line and his beautiful plump lips.
And I could tell that he had a muscular body as my hands were firmly pressed against his chest. I bet he had a gorgeous face behind that hoodie.
Before, he could ask me something, one of the guys behind spoke,
“Oye, hero leave that girl she is ours.”
Their words scared me and I unknowingly fisted the the hoodie guy’s shirt. I sensed one of them nearing towards us and I inched a little closer to him. I don’t know why his presence gave me peace and relief.
After that I saw him taking my hand out of his shirt. His touch gave me tingles. He gently pushed me behind him and once again I fisted his shirt from the back.
“Back off.” His husky tone send shivers down my spine.
But, I guess they were not ready to leave me and tried to hold me. Even before he could touch me Mr. Gorgeous (Yeah, that’s what I named him) caught the guy’s hand and punched him.
What followed after that was a lot of punches, kicks and some blood which made me dizzy.
I guess the guys understood that they couldn’t win over Mr. Gorgeous and they went away half running and half limping.
After that, he turned and walked towards me with his hoodie still on.
But, I don’t know what happened to me that my vision started blurring and my legs gave up but, before I could touch the ground he came and caught me.
The last thing I saw was a pair of beautiful chocolate brown orbs looking at me before darkness consumed me.

Amazing✨
Amazing story line ...I love manan story 🦋❤️
Hi myraa_writes,
I recently went through your story "Monster’s Babygirl" and I loved it so much. Your writing is amazing and I kept thinking how cool it would look as a comic.
I loved the opening where Nandini gazes at the stars and recounts her parents watching over her from the sky so poetic and haunting. And the scene where she is cornered by three men and then rescued by the mysterious hoodie-clad man it was intense and cinematic. These moments are ideal for a comic as they’d look visually striking and emotionally gripping.
I specialize in adapting stories into manga and comics and I’d love to bring your story to life visually. No pressure though I really think your work would shine as a comic. If you are interested in a paid collaboration I’d love to discuss how we could make that happen.
If you are interested message me on Instagram (username: digitalstrokes_21) or DM me on DC (username: peterjones_90) so we can bring the story to life visually
Regards
Peter
