Prologue
The I bars on the windows were thick, blocking out any kind of sunlight that tried to peek through, I couldn't remember the last time I had seen the sun. I felt like a lion in a cage that would rip someone to shreds just to get out of the confinement. I wasn't in trouble or anything. They were just scared I'd hurt someone, and I didn't blame them either. No one would be sane after what I witnessed. I could still feel the fear coursing through my veins. Nightmares would cloud my mind when I tried to sleep. Their screams were so loud. I rocked back and forth, desperately trying to forget everything, but it was no use. Soon enough I was thrown into another flash of painful and terrifying memories. At first, we were celebrating. Our parents let us go on a senior trip over spring break. Which was weird because I never thought they would agree to let me go on a trip with my boyfriend, James and best friend, Quinn. As soon as they said yes, Quinn called her parents and begged them to let us stay at her sister's beach house in Florida while she was on break for college. She always comes back during her spring break. When we were at the beach house things started getting weird, none of us felt comfortable. With that feeling, we had decided to go home. The time in between was fuzzy. The memory closed and another one was opened. This one was especially darker. I was chained to the ground again. I ripped at the chains trying to get free. I could hear the faint chuckling from the celling speakers. The person did this to taught me. I didn't know how long it had been. I wasn't sure where James and Quinn were. The voice told me they were alive, but I had had a feeling they were dead. I didn't know what to call the voice so I had just settled on calling it "The Shadow." I had woken up once and I could see the Shadow staring at me. I could tell from the figure that it was man. He was wearing a mask, but it wasn't a creepy mask, it was just a half black and half white full faced mask that would be seen at a Masquerade ball. He laughed and started coming towards me. I wanted to scream but I couldn't. I hadn't had water in what seemed like a lifetime. He slips out a key from his coat pocket and unlocks the chains. My mind flashes to all the twisted things he could do to me. Each thought was worse than the last. He quickly ties a rope around my hands. I wanted fight back, but I knew it would just cause death to come sooner. He drags me by my wrist to a solid blood red room. My head immediately turns to the sight of James strung up in one corner of the room. I silently cry noticing the blood surrounding his body. He was so pale. I could tell he was dying. His breaths were shallow. I turned to the next side of the room where more whimpering could be heard from Quinn. She wasn't bleeding, but she was drenched in what I hoped was water. Her body was shivering. The man jerks me away and takes me to a panel in the middle of the room. My eyes switch to the buttons. One of them was red with cords going to James and the other one was a blue button that was going to Quinn.
"Pick one" His voice was low almost incoherent.
I knew what he meant. I quickly shook my head, only to have one of my hands placed on each button.
"Pick one or I'll chose."
"Please, I'm begging you! Please, don't"
"Fine."
Before I could beg again, he shoves my hands into both buttons. The wires sent waves of harsh electricity to each of the two people I love most. The longer he held my hands the more electricity that flowed. More and more until everything went silent. I screamed as loud as I could as I watched both of their bodies go limp on the cold concrete floor. I drop to my knees as warm tears rush down my face. I choke on my own breathing as he laughs uncontrollably and then, he lifts his mask slightly. Just enough for his lips to be visible. He presses his cold lips to my cheek and stays there for what seems like forever, before pulling away. He readjusts his mask, so his face is, once again, hidden and drops a flip phone in front of me.
"I'll see you soon Jennifer Lawson."
He looks at me one last time before walking away, leaving me with the bodies. I sit there trying to wrap my head around the fact that the two people I swore to never live without, are the two people I was just forced to kill. I hastily grab the phone and start to dial.
