Prologue

“Hey, Alexa,” my best friend, Maddie, said as she walked up to my locker. “You wanna come to my house after school.”

“Can’t,” I said after taking my Algebra book out. “I’m meeting Kyle at the library.”

“Isn’t Saturday your one-year-anniversary?”

“Yeah. I can’t wait to see what he has planned.”

Kyle and I met at a football game when he was being introduced as the new quarterback. He had Chemistry class with Maddie, and she thought we should get to know each other, so I decided to go to his football game with her.

When I saw him run out onto the field, I couldn’t believe my eyes. He looked so handsome in his jersey.

After the game, we waited for him by the fence.

“He’s probably getting changed,” Maddie said.

When I watched him walk toward us, I couldn’t help but stare. He had a chiseled jaw, shaggy brown hair, and piercing blue eyes.

“Hey, Mads,” he said as he approached us.

“Hey, Kyle. Congratulations on winning the game. And being quarterback.”

“Thanks. You must be Alexa,” he said as he shifted his eyes on me. “Maddie didn’t tell me you were so beautiful.”

“Well, um, she didn’t tell me you were such a gentleman.”

“Well, I try.”

“Hey, uh, why don’t we all go get a milkshake?” Maddie asked, breaking the tension.

“Sounds great.”

So we all went to the local diner to grab milkshakes. And I had to admit I was having a good time with Kyle. We started talking and laughing, and Maddie even gave me a wink a few times.

All of a sudden, I heard the jukebox come on. Then Kyle stood up and offered me his hand. “Wanna dance?”

“Uh, sure.”

I was really enjoying dancing with him, and I saw Maddie smiling at me, like she was happy for me.

I was having so much fun dancing with Kyle, I lost track of time.

“Alexa, we have to go,” Maddie said. We have to study for our Algebra test.′

“Um, I can take you home if you want,” Kyle said.

“Uh, okay. Sure. Thanks.”

When we arrived at my house, he got out of the car and walked me to my door.

“I had a great time tonight, Kyle.”

“Me too. And I would really like to get to know you better.”

“So would I,” I said shyly. “Um, I should go in.”

“Wait.” And then he leaned in and kissed me on the cheek. “Goodnight, Alexa.”

“Goodnight, Kyle.”

After that night, our relationship grew more and more. I loved being with him, and he made me happy. I thought we would be together forever.

But nothing would prepare me for what I would find out later.
