Just Another Day
*Jasmines POV*
I opened my eyes and looked around my room. The ceiling, the nightstand and bathroom door to my right, and to my left... HIM. My husband, Trevor.
We have been having problems for a while now. It started with little fights over nothing. Then he started coming home from work late and staying out all night. And now, I hardly ever see him. I get up and go to work and so does he. I come home and sometimes he does too. It only leads to fighting. I swore I would never let our daughter be in the middle of it. Sometimes he is just relentless. It's as though he doesnt care if she hears us.
I sigh and get out of bed. I go to the bathroom and do my business. Then I brush out my long dirty blond hair and brush my teeth. I look in the mirror. My hair is slightly wavy, my eyes a bright green and oh... they have big dark circles under them. Trevor and I were up late arguing again. He says I'm getting fat. I know he was drunk and not thinking, but I can't help looking at myself. I'm not skinny like a model, but Im not fat either. I would say I'm thick. I have big hips, decent sized breasts and my stomach wasnt flat with abs but it wasnt big and hanging out, just a little bit more than "flat abs". My arms were skinny and I have long legs for my height. Sometimes I wish I had a bigger chest though. I sigh and decide to put on some makeup. I start with primer, then foundation, concealer, eyeliner, blush and mascara. Done. I spray some of my bath and body works 1000 wishes perfume and go toward the closet.
I quietly sneak past my husband as to not wake him. He works night shift tonight so he needs his rest. I slowly and quietly pull open my dresser drawer and pull out a pair of socks, new underwear and a bra. Then the next drawer, a pair of jeans. I take it all into the closet and change, then grab one of my many T-shirts from a hanger and toss it over my head. It's the one with a picture of a giraffe on it, one of my favorites.
I sneak out the bedroom door and quietly shut it behind me. I then make some oatmeal and go wake my daughter, Leslie. I love her to death. She is everything to me. She's 1 and a half now. She's getting so big! Walking into her room I see she's already awake and standing in her crib. She reaches out for me and I pick her up and kiss her cheek.
"Mama" she says.
"Yes baby, we're gonna get your diaper changed and then eat breakfast!" I tell her.
I lay her down and change her diaper, then carry her back out to the kitchen and feed her her oatmeal. One bit at a time, she devours it all. I pick up her outfit for the day and get her dressed. Then I put her down to play with her favorite stuffed bunny. I walk over to my shoe rack, grab my work shoes and put them on.
"Alright baby let's go to grandma's!" I tell her as I pick her up.
"Nana" she replies
I giggle "Yes baby, Nana"
I grab my purse, the keys to my Yukon, her diaper bag and her sippy cup as I head out the door with her on my hip. When I get to the Yukon I open her door and put her in her carseat with her bunny and sippy cup. After strapping her in, I put her bag on the floor and walk around to the driver door. I get in and start it up. "Ready? Let's go!"
When I pull up to my Mom's house she's waiting on the porch for us. She looks like an older version of me with gray/ blonde hair and brown eyes. She dyes it that way, or it would still be blonde. She is only 46. I put the Yukon in park and my mom rushes over to get Leslie out of her carseat. I hear her little giggle when she sees my mom. It makes me smile when I hear her giggle. I get out and walk around to the other side of the Yukon.
"Morning Mom" I tell her.
"Good morning! What time will you be off tonight?" She asks.
"Well I think they have me working until close so it will be really late." I say.
"Well can Leslie just stay the night with me then?" She beams at me.
"Sure. You have clothes and everything so that's fine"
I'm actually slightly relieved, but also sad because I will miss her. I grab Leslie's bag and carseat and take them up to the porch where my Mom has run off to. I set them both down and kiss Leslie on the cheek.
"Goodbye baby. I'll see you tomorrow." I smile at her.
"Bye bye" she says while waving at me.
I almost tear up. She's learning so quick now. My Mom smiles at me and heads inside with Leslie. I head for the running Yukon. I'm glad I have my mom here, otherwise I dont know what I would do. I can't afford a babysitter. And if I dont work, I have no money because Trevor won't let me have any. Something about me overspending... even though I get necessary household items. It's not like I buy myself a bunch of clothes I don't need or expensive jewelry. I'm buying food and toilet paper for him to wipe his ass with.
I back out of Mom's driveway and head for work. I work at a small pet shop in town. Theres me, the owner Chelsea, Tom and Brittany. We're like a small family there. Chelsea is understanding and knows I have a daughter, so she gives me days off when I need to attend a doctor appointment or Trevor has to work and Mom is busy. Brittany and I get along very well. We aren't friends per say, but we talk a lot at work. Trevor doesnt let me go out. He's so jealous. He doesn't like any man looking at me. Or at least that's what he told me. Tom learned that the hard way. He has a slight crush on me and told me that I should leave Trevor. Naturally I told Trevor because he's my husband. The next day Tom came to work with a black eye...and didn't speak to me for a week.
I pull in at work and park in my usual spot. I painted it to look like frogs sitting on leaves. Chelsea said it was amazing and had me paint hers with a cat and dog. Of course Brittany then had me paint hers with a tortoise, then Tom's with a Bearded Dragon. I love to paint so I didnt mind.
I walk into work and see that we are already busy. Well Let's get through this rush! I immediately start helping customers. One lady wanted chinchilla dust, another wanted a gold fish for her grandson and a man wanted to know where the hamster food was. 30 minutes later I go to ring up a customer and realize I forgot to clock in. I laughed and apologized to the Man, before clocking in really quick. I will have Chelsea fix my time later.
The day passed very quickly, as we were so busy. Before I knew it, it was time for me to go on break. I punched out and went to the breakroom to grab my phone. I dialed the number and waited for my Mom to answer. On the 3rd ring I heard "Hello?"
"Hi Mom. How is everything going?" I questioned her.
"It's fine. She's taking a nap right now. She had a big lunch." She told me.
"Oh really? What did she have?"
"Well she had some mini corndogs, some green beans and some pears. She loved it." She giggled.
"That's good. Remember you can call the store if you need anything Mom."
"I know, go eat lunch. I've got this." She nagged me.
"Okay okay, I love you, kiss her for me."
"I will, love you to."
After that she hung up the phone. I sighed. I was going to miss her tonight. Leslie is my whole world.
The day ended almost too early. I was finishing up my shift at work. All I had to do was take out the trash and mop the floor. I gathered all the trash and set it by the back door. Chelsea was the only one here besides me. She was in the office counting money and closing the register. I pulled out the mop and began mopping the front of the store and making my way toward the back. After I was finished, I took the mop and bucket to the closet and walked to the office.
"Hey Chelsea?" I called out.
"Yes dear?" She looked up at me over her tiny circle glasses. Chelsea was in her late 40's and had black hair that was starting to gray at the roots. She had a small face and was short. She came up to my shoulder. I'm only 5'4 myself.
"I clocked in a half an hour late today. I came in during that rush this morning. Could you fix my time for me?" I smiled wide at her knowing she would say yes.
"Of course dear, head home to that beautiful girl of yours." She answered and went back to her work.
"Thanks Chels, you're the best! I'll take the trash out on my way."
"Alright dear." She smirked at the money in her hand.
I turned, gathered up the trash bags and walked out into the dark night. There was a light breeze and the moon was out. Tonight was a full moon. It hung low in the sky and was absolutely breathtaking. I stopped to look at it for a minute.
"Beautiful" I said to no one in particular.
I continued my walk to the dumpster, trash bags in hand and tossed them up and over. I turned to walk to my Yukon and heard a noise from the treeline. I live in the middle of West Virginia. Theres nothing but mountains and forest everywhere. So it isnt uncommon to have a coyote or a bear show up randomly. I stopped and looked, hoping it was just my imagination. Too scared to stay, I hightailed it over to my Yukon and jumped inside, locking the doors behind me. I pulled my little light blue 380 out from the center console and stuck it to the magnet under my dashboard.
Taking a breath, I looked back over to the treeline where I heard the noise and saw a pair of yellow eyes looking straight at me. NO WAY was I staying here! That's got to be a bobcat!! I threw the Yukon in reverse and raced out of the parking lot toward home.
Ounce I had calmed down, I realized what was in store for me at home. A house to myself. That meant a hot bath and bed. Oh how could I be patient? I went a little too fast on the way home, doing 10 over instead of my usual 5 over. Once I pulled in the driveway, something caught my eye. Trevor's car? What was he doing home?
I parked and walked inside. Oh God what are we going to fight about tonight? Will it be about how I work too much and should be home with Leslie more? Or will it be about the fact that Leslie isn't with me? Only one way to find out....dammit why did I speed home?
When I walked in, Trevor was sitting at the table waiting for me...beer in hand. There were 5 empty beer bottles on the table around him and 2 on the counter....who knows how many were in the trashcan. When he saw me he immediately stood up and started yelling.
"WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL DAY?!"
"Um...at work." I said calmly.
"WELL I DONT GIVE A DAMN! YOU SHOULD BE HERE! NOW WHERE'S DINNER?!" He shouted in my face.
I could smell the alcohol. It reeked, and when was the last time he brushed? Trying not to gag I glanced at the clock. It was 9 o clock. Had he really not eaten?
"Did you not eat dinner? And why arent you at work?" I questioned him suspiciously.
"I dont work today! It's Sunday! I never work weekends! You know this woman!" He told me like I was a common idiot.
"Actually its Monday." I corrected him.
"Eh whatever" he said before taking a big swig of his beer.
I sighed and made him a TV dinner. After slapping it down in front of him, I went to take a hot shower and get in bed. Hopefully he doesn't get fired for not showing at work tonight...and why didn't he ask where Leslie was? Oh well...he's drunk.
