Knockout.
It's 11:30 pm and I'm sitting at home waiting for my dad to get home. I was taking care of my siblings and now they are asleep. I get up and walk to the window. Their isn't a car yet. I sighed and see if my dad has called me.
Another hour passes and it's now 12:30. I've been sitting in my chair, with a pit of worry sitting in my stomach as I'm thinking about what could have happened to my dad. As I approach the window for the millionth time, you see an abundance of flashing lights. A car pulls in, but it's not ordinary car. It's a police car. After staring at it for so long, someone knocks on the door. I open the door, frozen. Then, I see a police officer, dressed in all blue, holding his flashlight in one hand.
"Is this the resident of Brad?)
"Yes, I'm the oldest child"
"Is there another adult?"
"No it's just me sir.."
"I'm afraid there has been an accident....can you come with me?"
"I have to get my siblings...I can't leave them here alone.."
After a moment of silence between the officer and I, I go and get ready, and help my siblings get ready too. After they have their clothes and shoes on, you guys enter the vehicle. After a long drive, I arrive at the hospital. Tears in my eyes have formed from pure fear of what could have happened. I take a long, deep sigh, and exit the car, helping my siblings out after. Im are being lead through a long series of hallways. Finally, I arrive at the room. My eyes locked in place, scared to see what could have happened. Taking a step in, I feel a hot tear drip down your face. I walk over to my dads side. Holding his hand.
"What did you do dad?"
As the heart monitor beeps on, I realize it's time to make the ultimate decision. Sign the papers. Or send him to a facility hoping for dreamwork and fairytales. The doctor explains what the papers mean, even though I already know. You sign the papers, because I know that's what he wanted.
After what seems like an eternity, I finish, heading back into my dads room. I give the papers back to the nurse. She flips through them, then nods.
"We can begin now. You can sit next to him if you'd like."
I nod, watching as she unhooks all the tubes, catheders, and unplugs all the machines. As the nurse starts pulling off the tape holding the breathing tube in, you stop her.
"Wait!"
"Ma'am-"
"Just wait!"
After a moment or two of silence, looking at the nurse with a look of grief on your face, you turn to your dad. You grab his hand and close your eyes, as tears stream down your face.
"Dad?"
No response.
"Dad!!!"
Still no response.
After a moment or two, I let out a shaky sigh.
"It's okay."
"We'll be fine"
You blink away a few years.
"Are you ready ma'am?"
"...no.."
"..but go ahead.."
I place my hand on my dads chest. Feeling his last breath. His life drain from him in one moment. And the next, I'm laying on the floor unconscious.
