CONTRABAND

I sit quietly in the chair, the soft folds of my beige gown pooling around me, a bittersweet smile on my face. My heart swells with conflicting emotions as I watch him—the father of my child—standing at the altar, his eyes glowing with love for the woman who now holds his heart. The joy in the air is palpable, and I’m genuinely happy for him; he’s found his forever. Yet, as I rest my hands over the subtle curve of my belly, I can’t help but feel the weight of what could have been. This moment isn’t mine to claim, and while my heart aches, I remind myself that love sometimes means letting go, even when it leaves you longing for a different ending.

I am Nandini Malhotra, the mother of Manik Malhotra’s child. Our bond is one that defies conventional definitions—we are cousins, best friends since childhood, and inexplicably connected by fate, as we share the same birthday. In many ways, we are twins born to different parents, our lives intertwined from the very beginning. Manik has always been my anchor, the person who understood me like no one else could. And now, as I sit here witnessing him embark on a new chapter with the love of his life, I can’t help but reflect on the depth of our connection and the bittersweet turn our shared story has taken.

“Now, I declare you two as lawfully husband and wife,” the priest announces, his voice echoing through the grand hall. The sound of applause and cheers fills the air as they share their first kiss as a married couple. I sit among the crowd, my hands instinctively resting on my two-month-old baby bump. A gentle smile graces my lips, though my heart feels a twinge of sadness. This moment is theirs, a celebration of love and commitment, and I am genuinely happy for them. Yet, beneath the applause and joy, I carry the weight of my own story, one that will forever tie me to him in a way no one else will understand.

I wipe away the lone tear that escapes my eye, quickly replacing it with a soft smile as I meet Manik’s gaze. He’s standing there, his hand still entwined with his new bride’s, but his eyes are locked on me. There’s confusion etched into his expression, mingled with a flicker of care that hasn’t faded despite the distance that now separates our worlds. I know he can sense my emotions—he always could, even without words—but I offer him a reassuring nod, silently urging him to focus on the happiness of this day. This moment belongs to him, and I won’t let my emotions overshadow it.

I rise from my seat, steadying myself as I make my way toward the newlyweds. My smile feels genuine, though my heart cries. “Congratulations,” I say warmly, looking at both Manik and his bride. She beams at me, her joy radiant, while Manik’s gaze lingers on me, soft and unreadable.

Before I can step back, Manik gently pulls me to his other side, wrapping an arm protectively around me. “You’re family,” he says with a faint smile, guiding me closer for the photograph. As the camera flashes, I rest a hand on my baby bump, a private conversation playing out in my mind.

“Your first picture with Daddy, little one,” I think to myself, a bittersweet ache settling in my chest. I glance at Manik, his happiness evident, and I know this moment will be etched into my memory—a blend of love, loss, and the quiet hope I carry for the life growing inside me.

“Are you okay?” Manik whispers, his voice gentle yet laced with concern as he smiles politely at the guests approaching to congratulate them. His hand lingers on my back, a subtle gesture of reassurance that only deepens the ache within me.

Why does he care so much? The question echoes in my mind, stirring emotions I’ve tried to bury. He’s standing here, newly married, basking in the glow of a love meant to last a lifetime, yet his gaze finds its way to me, his concern piercing through the layers of my composed facade.

I force a small smile, nodding in response to his question, but inside, I wrestle with the truth. His care, his kindness—it’s everything and nothing I need at this moment.

I step back, creating a small yet deliberate distance between us, knowing his wife wouldn’t appreciate the closeness. As I move, his hand, which had been resting on my back, lingers mid-air for a moment before falling to his side. The flicker of surprise in his eyes doesn’t escape me, but he masks it quickly.

It’s new, this space between us—an invisible wall that I’ve never put up before. The realization seems to unsettle him, though he doesn’t show it outright. For years, I’ve been his anchor, his constant, the one who never stepped away. But now, with his life on a new path and mine quietly reshaping itself, this distance feels inevitable, even if it feels foreign to both of us.

I take a deep breath, my hands instinctively brushing over my baby bump as if to ground myself. This is how it has to be, I remind myself, even as my heart aches at the shift in our dynamic. Some things, no matter how familiar, must change to make room for what’s meant to come.

As soon as I step back, Mukti, Manik’s wife, steps in with perfect timing, wrapping her arm around his and pulling him closer for a series of couple pictures. Her radiant smile lights up the room as she leans in, their closeness a testament to the bond they now share.

The photographer prompts them, and they oblige effortlessly, sealing the moment with a soft kiss. The crowd around them cheers, and I can’t help but smile despite the pang in my chest. I remind myself that this is their moment, their story unfolding, and I am merely a witness to it.

Still, the sight of them together feels like the closing of a chapter I hadn’t realized I was still holding onto. My hand once again brushes over my baby bump, anchoring me to the new reality I’m building, one where my happiness no longer hinges on being by his side.

This is the life he’s chosen, and I have mine—a future that’s waiting to bloom, even if it feels lonely for now.

To be continued...
