The object is always more than the object itself. It is the soul of remembrance. The object tells stories, making you laugh, and, all too often, making you cry. But cry or laugh, the object remains. The story doesn’t alter. And the story becomes what the object remembers. The soul lives again in the telling.
Three objects -- a dusty harness collar, the last rose of winter, and a mound of dirt and tears -- bring back the soul of Bernie.
Thus begins the telling.
